I think a new carburetor kit and a good carburetor tune up is in order my friend. Sounds like it's starving for gas. If it bogs down after warm up when you throttle it, then yes it needs a carb tuning. The L screw is the low side screw and should be turned in lightly until it seats then back it out one and quarter turns (1 1/4). The H screw is your high speed screw. Also, turn it in lightly until it seats, then back it out approximately a 3/4 turn. With these settings the unit should start and may even stay running. Again, if it bogs when throttled, while running turn the L screw out a little more maybe only 1/16th of a turn and then try it again. If it does rev then you'll have to adjust the H screw in about a 1/16th of a turn. But make sure you only do this after the engine has warmed up.

Hope this works, good luck

Sounds like the clutch has taken a long trip south. If the clutch pads are not wore out, try some wd40 on the pad hinges.

My husband took his Poulan Pro 31 cc weed eater/trimmer apart and now needs an engine diagram to put it back together. Where can I get a downloadable one ?

Go to the Poulan web page http://www.poulanpro.com/node6556.aspx and enter the model number of the string trimmer. If the trimmer is a Weed Eater brand (owned by Poulan) then go to this page http://www.weedeater.com/node6507.aspx. I think you can also locate older model manuals in their archives.

Clutch removal on 31 cc weed eater

Break the engine away from the shaft on the shaft side. I think 4 bolts/screws. Once you have that open you will seethe part that goes over the shaft. To take it off, hold the part with one hand and remove a screw in the center of the part using a #15 TORX screwdriver. Take off the part and under it is the clutch. Good luck...Lee
