Removeing timer switch knob

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.########) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

See the following for how to release the console:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=d09053515715195798276a5664b79cf0

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers:

If this is a basic top load, direct drive washer, these units may have one of two different timers. (See the Whirlpool PDF).

On models with a metal timer, you have to release the console, pull it forward and tilt it back in order to get to the back of the timer.

The knob screws onto a medal shaft that goes through the timer.

Usually, trying to un-screw the knob won't work by itself since the shaft will also turn.

I found that if you hold the back of the shaft with a thin needle-nosed pliers, you can unscrew the knob.

Then you simply have to disconnect the timer.

The Whirlpool PDF also has troubleshooting and testing procedures for the timer.

How to install 3949238 in kenmore model 110.26912691. I have unscrewed the control panel, but the brass hinge wont come out

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer;

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.26912691&pathTaken=partSearch

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers:

In order to replace the "dial" you have to release the console by snapping off the two end caps, unscrew the two phillips head screws, and pull and lift the console.

It should lean back and balance on the hinges.

To release the dials from the timer, you may have to hold the metal shaft on the back of the timer with a thin needle nose pliers while you un-screw the knob.

With the knob off, the dial simply pulls off.

How to remove the washer cycle selection/start-stop knob on a Whilpool Heavy Duty Thin Twin stacked washer dryer

I believe the selector knob on a Whirpool just has to be turned counter-clockwise with the selector pushed in. It will spin off the shaft and then the outer indicator dial will pull off. The shaft also has a keyed slot that will only allow the dial to be removed and installed one way, so there should be no question as to how it goes back on.

Was there a reason as to why you are removing the washer selector knob? If this is a simple matter of replacing a broken water temperature selector, you shouldn't have to remove any of the control knobs to gain access to the selector. The entire front panel comes off by removing the screws holding it in place. That way you can access the broken selector from behind the front panel much easier. Just remove the panel right above the washer top (under the dryer) and it should expose the front panel mounting screws. Remove these screws and the front panel comes off. Just make sure the unit is unplugged before you begin. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you need further assistance.
