How long is the charging time with the a/c adapter?

This is normal. The adapter will only allow ''charging.'' The new Apple product is not compatible with older (non genuine Apple) docks and accessories. And even with ''genuine'' Apple, older units may not work with an adapter. With genuine older Apple products you can check with Apple what will work with an adapter.

Ps... Even the _adapter_ needs to be ''genuine'' Apple. Most of the time, ''charging'' is all you will get from generic adapters.

If the laptop turns on and stays on for at least 30 minutes, the battery is holding a charge. If the laptop doesn't turn on or the battery doesn't power the laptop for at least 30 minutes, the battery should be replaced.

This is true, you will not be able to charge the battery without the correct charger. For mostly all laptops, when the charger is not maintaining a charge, it is time for a new one. However, it does not have to be the manufacturer's adapter, but I recommend purchasing the battery made for the Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook.
