This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

There are a number of Series 80 design washers. You'll need the actual model number to better check for the problem.

First, I'd remove the top agitator (as you've already done), then I'd remove the main agitator.

Under it you will see a clip and what Whirlpool calls a "washer". The "washer has two prongs, one fits into the main agitator shaft drive and the other fits in the lower agitator. If one or the other of the prongs is broken, the agitator most likely wont. I'd also look inside the main agitator to see if the ridges are broken off.

I'd then start the washer on it's smallest cycle and see if the main agitator shaft turns back and forth. If it doesn't and the washer goes through it's drain and spin cycles, the problem is likely in the transmission itself with what they call the agitate gear and / or agitate cams.

Please see the Whirlpool / Kenmore PDF document on installation, maintenance and operation of direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6?OpenView&Start=1

This is a Whirlpool document with parts lists for their commercial washers (basically the same as the consumer models)

If the problem is in the transmission, although it looks complicated, it really isn't that bad if you have a moderate level of mechanical ability.

Series 80 Agitator top dosent work

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

I assume that your model number starts with a 110 instead of 100.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.26842692

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Following is an illustrated description of the above.

Agitator: bottom moves, top does not

On the Sears parts site:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.26902691&pop=flush

replace the 110.26902691 with your model number (lift the lid and the model number should be printed on the cabinet) and look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

This is what they look like:

Replacing the agitator dogs in a Kenmore 80 series washer

Hi, Remove the cap on the agitator and then remove the inside cover. There is a 7/16" bolt under the inside cover. Remove the bolt and the agitator will lift out. Seperate the 2 pieces of the agitator and replace the dogs. You might have to use a flat blade screw drive and punch out the 4 tabs around the bolt hole in the agitator if this applies.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Kenmore series 80 washer: does not twist in the middle

Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way).If you're able to turn it in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced.
Remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.
