I have a sanyo tp1020 direct drive with automatic return. the arm has been doing a peculiar thing where it will work fine for a few hours of play and then start catching on the grooves and skipping. sometimes it will start to move properly and then do it again a few moments later. this applies to pretty much any record with slight wear. i've tried playing around with the weight and anti-skating in addition to lubing the arm joint but the quirk still comes and goes.
Is there a counterweight on your arm or is the an adjustible spring setting? You need to move the counterweight toward the needle. You dont need much but the needle end needs to be heavier than the back side. If your anti skating is a magnet ... reduce the force on that as well.
Let me know what happens.
