I recently reinstalled my OS (Windows XP Media center edition). Ever since i reloaded the OS my WD My Book Home edition 1TB external HDD stopped showing up in the windows explorer as a drive letter. The drive is listed under the Disk Management as "unallocated". It was working fine before i reinstalled the OS. For example i backed up my documents from C: drive onto the external drive and i was able to access the drive and copy the files. Please note that before reinstalling the OS i didn't remove the file using the safely remove hardware option and also i didn't turn off the drive. I'm not sure if this is a partition table corruption issue. My entire backup is in the file and it will be a great loss if i can't retrieve files from the disk. I would greatly appreciate your help in recovering the data from the disk.

I can't diagnose the drive issue... but I can offer a reliable and trustworthy data recovery solution that I had to use a year ago. It's Seagate's do it yourself data recovery and will work on your WD drive. So if you can't resolve the issue otherwise, consider this as a recovery option...

My WD My Book Essential 1TB External is not showing up on 'My Computer'. It was working perfectly in the morning, then when I rebooted my machine it no longer showed up.

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

WD My Book not displayed in windows explorer as drive letter

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.
