I have a Lady Kenmore washer - model number 7204903- when it is agitating it makes a horrible deep screeching noise -so i turn it off and on - many times until it stops - my friend thinks it is the bearings - does anyone work on this model - and would it be cost effective instead of just replacing the machine - i want to keep it - i love everything old and original - thanks for your help - karen

I lloked up your washer and it is an old belt-drive machine. they were real workhorses, but now kind of outdated. there are not many repairmen who are willing to work on these beasts. the problem is that as one problem is fixed, another might pop up and the repairman will be expected to remedy any future problems...because he touched it. if you can locate a repairman who will work on your washer, if it is in good shape, it would probably be worth fixing

It sounds like the transmission is done. Can't pinpoint what it is exactly, but I would start there.

Grinding washing machine agitator

more than likely the pump is the part that is making the noise. You can verify this by leaning the machine back where you can see the pulleys, your pump will be the one in the back. Remove the belt and each pulley should turn smoothly. The part number for the pump is 35-6780

if it is like the other you have to remove the top cover of the agitator cap with a small flat head screwdriver, then using a 7/16" socket and ratchet with an extension remove the bolt(right hand thread) and pull up the agitator.

Won't spin and loud noise

Kenmore washers could hold a few problems. First, without a model number you don't know who makes it. See, Kenmore does not make washers, they have someone else make them such as Whirlpool or Frigidaire. More that likely you have a Whirlpool (which is a good thing). What you are probably hearing is the coupler of the machine broken. A coupler is what replaced a belt in the newer machines. This piece is installed in between the motor and transmission. If it breaks it makes a loud rattle/grind sound. It is possible that the transmission is also the culprit. However, this noise is entirely different. A bad transmission generally makes a loud screech noise. If this does not help, please post a model number of the washer and I will gladly further assist you :)
