I fixed a problem with my Schwinn Elliptical 430 resistance level not working. When I would change the level anywhere from 1-16, I could hear the motor turning, but there was no change in resistance. If you hear the motor moving, then try this:

Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove all the screws on the left side of the large plastic cover (left side if you are standing on the machine). When all screws are removed, you can pull the plastic cover off, and move it towards the back of the machine without having to disconnect any of the metal bars. (The bottom two screws are a little tricky to get off. Hold the housing in place, don't let it sag, in order to get them out.

Look inside the unit and find the magnet, which is a rounded, brake-show like piece that is close to the flywheel, on the top half of the unit. There's a cable from the motor that goes upward and is attached to the magnet housing.

If you try to adjust the resistance level now, you should see cable move up. This is supposed to allow the magnet to move closer to the flywheel and increase resistance. In my case, the magnet was stuck and wouldn't move upwards. When I gave the magnet a little push with a screwdriver, it popped up to where it should be.

To solve this issue, you will need two wrenches. You must go to the opposite end of the magnet, towards the front of the machine, and you will see it's connected with a nut & bolt. Using a couple wrenches, hold the bolt, and loosen the nut about 1/4 turn.

This should lessen the pressure on the magnet housing and allow it to move freely and not bind. Reassemble everything. Lie the elliptical down on it's side to allow the screws to fall into the holes easier.

Once it's all back together, you should find that the resistance level works again!

Same problem with mine but instead of the magnet being stuck the cable that controls the tension had come off the pulley making it stay on full resistance. So check that to it's actually on the right side standing on it closest to the where your knee would be.

Wanted to say thank you, this worked for me. The cover is really hard to get off without disassembly, but you convinced me it was possible. You write very clearly.

Slight noise in level 1 resistance, then resistance won't change at all

if you are using the Normal charger AC, try to see if are O.K measure with DMM the output(see the laber for Output voltage VDC)
2) If you are using the Batteries , replace by new ones Type ALKALINE, very important. Clean very well the springs and tight, use electronic cleaner contacts, see if there are some wires loose or desolder.
3) If everything is o.k See for the small motor inside (this regulate the resistance) if working good, or the steel cable is broken, or missing or the motor is faulty, replace or repair.
Blessing.

Are exercise bands different colors for any reason or is it simply for personal choice and added variety?

Most exercise bands are color-coded in accordance to tension levels. I suggest buying bands from various tension levels since each muscle group will require a different level of resistance.

My 2001 FLHT's fuel gage jiggles wildly up and down while riding along. It is the only guage acting erratically. what could be the problem and how do I fix?

The problem is caused by the fuel sloshing around in the tank and the fact that Harley does not use a "dampened" gauge. The sending unit is a float attached to a rod inside the fuel tank. As the float rises and lowers, it changes the resistance of a variable resistor in the tank. The resistance is read by the gauge and converted into a reading that approximates the level of fuel in the tank. The reason the gauge is not dampened could be any number of reasons. Either Harley wanted to use a cheap gauge or a dampened gauge might allow you to run out of fuel because it reads the level of the fuel too slowly. In small tanks like the ones on motorcycles, this could be a problem. I know of no way to remedy the problem without changing the gauge and sending unit.

Good Luck

I changed a light bulb on my Viking hood, now I can't dim the lights anymore...they just stay on bright. what can i do to get dimming feature back?

If you put a CFL in it, they are not dimmable. If it is a standard light bulb, it should not affect the dimmer.
