Not enough information on the motor. what year and model? but all yamaha outboards are shut down by the C.D.I. being grounded by the key switch or the emergency kill switch. the cheapest thing to test or replace is the key switch and the emergency kill. with more info on engine I can help you further.

It’s the relay, they stick and the engine won’t shut down. Unplug the harness and see if it still runs, if it dies it’s the white wire, if it doesn’t turn off the relay is shot

Turn the switch off motor keeps running

It sounds like there is a short in the alternator or wiring for alternator. You are continuing running with the battery cut off. But the outboard generates its own power and its finding the way to the ignition. As for grounding, you may be idling too high for a quick shut off.

I have a 85hp Yamaha outboard motor. It starts easily, but wont shut off (with the key or kill switch).

sounds like the ground wire in the control box where your key switch is located is broken are disconnected. check the wiring harness plugs if it is unpluged are not pluged tight it will not shut off
