It's own. Turns on by itself. Have to keep it unplugged until ready to use. This has been going on for 3 wk's. Today, it wouldn't even heat. even though the heat and time were set and counting down. Then, the second time I tried to use it, it would't start at all.
I had the same problem last bight, woke to a house full of smoke from the microwave turning on by itself. Call Kitchenaid at 800-422-1230, they have agreed to repair or replace my unit for free ( it is also from 2006 ).
This is an over the range microwave if I guess correctly. ( I couldn't find the model at KitcheAid)
The computer board is no longer sealed and has gotten wet from steam coming off of food being cooked below it. You need the computer control board replaced. My parent's GE over the range microwave had similar problems a couple times.
I had the same problem with mine, it was selecting pizza 7", 9" or 12" by itself , stop on either one and start by itself. And for some reason if I was pushing the key number 6, I was selecting the pizza 7",9" or 12". This was intermittent. I disassembled the keypad and the electronic board; I reseated all the connectors from the module and even the ribbon connector from the keypad. This solve my problem, work goods since a month.
I got another problem now, my handle is getting loose. I don't think I'll buy a Kitchen Aid back.
Has Chris Angel been to your house recently?
Somewhere, you have a switch (read "set of contacts") that is connected (read "stuck closed')and will not let go.
The lack of heat could be a separate situation. Generally, I suggest door safety interlock micro switch failure. Do you open the door while the machine is operating? This is bad for the little contacts in the micro switch.
If yo go inside to look at these things DO NOT TOUCH THE SILVER CAN IN THE BACK - IT CAN BE LETHAL!
The micro switch will be near the top and of course inside and away from the hinge side of the door. This switch can be tested with an ohm meter. Make sure you unplug the machine before you do anything.
Let me know what happens.
I hope this was of some value.

A&E repair person was here today to check-out microwave. Need to replace microcpr.and l sub panel-control. My estimated cost is $211.78. I paid $350.00 for this microwave in 2006 (March). Needless to say, I won't repair it!!!. Have contacted UL,Inc. to see if they can do anything about having it re-called.
