External SimpleTech Simple drive 96300-40001-001

I have stored my digital photo on this external hard drive.
When the power cable is plugged in, the green light on the power box comes on but the lights in the drive do not come on nor does the drive itself
Any suggestions on getting the drive to come on so I can retreive my photos?

I've had this same problem, and the solution for me was in the USB cord, not the cheap one that came with it I had to buy a more expensive USB cord, one with brass or gold colored ends on it afterwards I was able to retrieve all my photos, music, etc. I hope this helps

The Master Boot Record (MBR) or File Allocation Table (FAT) may have become currupt. This can happen on Internal hard drives and even memory cards.
If you are using windows Vista, try connecting it to windows xp machine and see if the drive can be read. If it can, let windows do a full system scan on the drive and set it to automatically repair errors.

If you still continue to have problems you may need a File Recovery utility. Please see the information below.

Price Range - $35 - $70

Easeus Data Recovery Wizard - http://www.easeus.com/
Partition Recovery – Either Active File Recovery , Active Undelete or Active Partition Recovery. All of them are great. - http://www.partition-recovery.com/products.htm

I hope this helps you

Normally with external drivers all you have to do is plug the usb cable into your computer. If you have to cable for your external drive. Go to an electronics store and show them the hard drive. They will give you the right cable.

Hi,

You usually get this cable from nearest Bestbuy, Staples or Walmart store.
You can take the SimpleTech SimpleDrive to the store and ask for the adapter and they should be able to supply it.

This way you wont have trouble of getting you wrong part shipped as well.

I have a mini simple tech 160gb hard drive that when I plug it in an error message about power surge on the USB port. What can I do to get the data off of the drive

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Hello and welcome to the TSF. If the external drive has provisions for external power you'll need to plug that in, usb ports cannot power a 320 drive. If the drive has 2 usb plugs (one for additional power) you'll need them both plugged in, and I would suggest that the laptop should also be running off of external power rather than battery. If you disconnect the usb drive or any other usb device without first stopping the device then sometimes the usb ports will fail to recognize the device when it is plugged back in, a simple reboot should do the trick. You can also check in the device manager for any yellow exclamation marks on your usb host conrtoller and see if the driver for it is in need of an update.
Any drivers you need should be on simpletech's website, though normally you should not need any for a usb hdd. If the power cord/a/c adaptor is faulty or the hdd is loose in the enclosure(thus not making good contact) then you should pester simpletech to either replace the cord, a/c adaptor,or unit, and see if there are instructions on how to take apart the enclosure and reseat the drive/connections.

500Gb SimpleTech Ext Drive No Power

Hello.
It sounds like you might have a problem with the power supply.
I have seen MANY external hard drives with failing power supplies. Take it to the store you purchased it from for a check up, it should still be under warrantee if its only 3 months old.
Good Luck!

Does simple tech 250 drive need an external power source?

Yes, you need a power supply. I have several USB peripherals that, in a similar way, APPEAR to be on when you plug them into USB. But that interface cannot supply enough power to actually run the machine. The maximum is 0.5 A * 5 V = 2.5 W. The wee portable drives can run on that power, but a normal desktop drive, such as is inside a full-size desktop external enclosure, use ~ 8 W.

So you need a DC power supply! I bet SimpleTech can tell you what the correct current, voltage, and polarity is. Good luck.

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****
