These type of UPS's put out a simulated sine wave on battery power. When you test these with a regular voltmeter, it tries to read it as a pure "rounded" sinewave and will nearly always report 80 volts, instead of 120 volts. If you test it with a true RMS voltmeter you'll see that it is 120. Otherwise, these units are getting older and the batteries need to be replaced every 3-4 years. Based on your comment, you have a battery back up and your batteries are past their prime.
A true UPS powers a computer through a battery bank which is constantly recharged by a power supply. The batteries supply 110 volts AC through an inverter for yor computer. This system is the nextg best thing to a back up generator. When the power goes out, the charger can no longer charge the batterypack ...but you are not crashed. A Back up power supply is a battery that takes over temporarly in a power outage and allows you time to power down.
How old are your batteries? Are you able to get a voltage reading from them? If they are less than rated (probably 12 volts each), it is time to replace them
Let me know whaat you find.
