The projector unit keeps an internal timer to warn you when a lamp is near the end of its life. This timer doesn't automatically reset - you have to use the on-screen menu to reset it.

Her story sounds perfectly legit, you just need to perform the timer reset (or have her do it with you/for you) and you should be all set.

If the timer has not been reset telling the unit it has a new lamp you will get that message. Call a servicer to find out how to reset the timer if you don't have the owners manual. If the message continues after that you will need to purchace a new lamp. There are problems that accur with some aftermarket lamps.

I changed the bulb but it keeps saying replace bulb

Look through the settings to see if there is a reset option for warnings or for lamp warnings. Many products with lamps require you to not only replace the lamp but to reset the warning.

Hitachi CPS860 LCD Projector

Turn On. Press RESET switch for 3 or more seconds until a lamp and 2000 message appears in the middle of the bottom of the screen. Press RESET again and this message will expand to include cant remember then press arrows left arrow and the 2000 will reset to 0. If the first press does not immediately provide a message press it for longer and expect to see message on release. As mentioned you have to be quick otherwise the menu dissapears. If this happens just do it again until you get it completed.
