My father (84 yrs old) turned on the computer and everything booted up ok to the desktop and as he was mousing around he heard a pop and the screen went blank. He turned computer off and on several times by pressing the power button, but nothing. Power light on monitor constant green, power light on computer flashing green... I am not physically there to check it out but suspect a new monitor might be the cheapest solution?

first got the flashing green power lite on pc after power returned post Katrina. Today I shut the pc down to install more memory and a graphics card. After install all I got was flashing green.

It could of popped a overheat sensor switch and reset it self after it cooled.

The solution may depend on the type of mouse you are using. If it is a ball mouse, you may need to clean the ball, because dirt can throw off the sensors in the mouse. If it's a PS2 mouse connection (the round connector, not USB) try using a different mouse if you have one around. If it is a laser mouse, try plugging it into a different USB port on the computer, or try using a different mouse pad. If it is a wireless mouse, it may need new batteries, or may need to be synced up with the receiver again.

I would try another keyboard, and also zap the PRAM (boot up, hold P,R, OPT, CMD keys together till chime...hold down so chime heard two restart times, then let go).
A known good mouse and keyboard is a must, and make sure nothing else is plugged into Mac incase a device is causing this.
Upon booting, beofre Windows Logo, press F5 key to get computer to boot into SAFE MODE/Administrator. See if you have mouse control under this mode. If yes, then there's a good chance that the mouse is OK .
once in SAFE MODE and are able to regain mouse, the chances are good that you can just restart the computer and everything will return to "normal".
Suggestion #1: reboot computer to NORMAL after having sucessful SAFE MODE mouse test.
Suggestion #2: see if you have a recovery point (system restore) before the mouse issue came about.
looks like to me that you have generic drivers loaded if you get to my computer right click on it and go down to properties then click on it click on hardware and than look for your mouse and right click on it and look for remove than click on it to remove the mouse from the computer say yes than close out of it and restart the computer once the computer starts up the new hardware found should pop up and continue installation from here ok good luck !!!!!
i would reset your keyboard and mouse settings to default then shut down pc.. unplug components and wait for 3o secs and then try again.. if the problem persists, you may just have some loose connections especially if your pc is older..make sure there is enough slack for your mouse and keyboard wire to move around.. i know sometimes we can ruin them if we have then stretched to far out.. hope this helps.. d

Well, easy task, just put a music CD, on system and if you got an headphones, put in the green connector on your sound card, pop up the PC volume, and see if you heard sound, if you do, heard sound then the problem is your speakers. if don't is your sound card.

Chances are a capacitor has blown. They normally make such lovely poping noises when they die.
What will of course now be happening is the voltage inside where that capacitor was will be unstable and it could very well completely fail in the near future.
I would reccomend you get it to a repair shop sooner rather then later for a cheap simple repair rather then an expensive monitor replacement.
