The CS6419 isn't an answering machine. It will ring until you pick up, an answering machine picks up, or the caller hangs up.

My daughter gave me her v tech 6.0 phone, i would like to know how to program my own voice re answering messages and also how to be able to pick up my messages from outside of my house thank you

"DECT 6.0" is the generic name for the digital cordless technology used, not a particular phone model number. You'll need to look at the back or bottom of your phone's base unit for a sticker with the actual model number. Once you have your model number, you can download a copy of the manual from VTech here. Just find your model and click to download.

You didn't give a model number so I can't do any more than this. Here's the Vtech manual page. Find the model number on your phone and you can download the manual you need.

Hit the lower - on the banana bar (which is PROG,) select (top of banana bar) the directory, enter a name, select, etc. etc. Use the wing buttons or keypad to enter stuff, like # four times for a - (see p. 15 of the manual.)
