SOURCE: cannot transfer any files from my computer to my external hard
Did you install the drivers for the drive? Is it recognised in Windows as a device? If not, try reconnecting and Windows should prompt you to install the drivers, Assuming the drive is recognised by WIndows, then are a few causes for not transferring data. I've attached a link to Western Digital's FAQ regarding Data Transfer problems with your drive....
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=nCt181pj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=1017&p_li=&p_page=1&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=answers.search_nl&p_sort_by=&p_search_text=transferring+data
Several page of possible solutions are listed above.... however, you can refine the search if it is only happening when running specific apps or @ specific times. The answer you seek is located in this link. If you can provide more details on the type of file(s) you are trying to transfer and how, I'll refine the solution for you....
SOURCE: unplugged My Book USB port without ejecting 1st - all data lost!
I wish I had the words of comfort that you will need with this tale of woe I must tell you.
You see, its a matter of organization.
Though your data is SOMEWHERE on the disk, without proper ejection, the disk cannot find them as they had been assigned data space.
It is very much like the requirement that a computer be properly shut down or face similar problems with its internal disks becoming corrupted.
Your files were not actually cleared, they were corrupted, but perhaps the volume can be repaired.
Go into your applications folder, (as you should have done while installing the disk in the first place) and find a folder entitled "Utilities" and within that folder and icon entitled "Disk Utility" and click on it. and a dialogue window will open up showing all disks currently installed, including your external disk which you should select and you will notice tabs entitled "First Aid" "Erase" "RAID" and "Restore"
Follow the instructions found there and the very best of luck to you.

Hi gbenez. Either the enclosure or the hard drive is going bad. (Sorry to be this harsh). What I recommend is DONT TRY CHKDSK or any test utility because it will stress the hard drive making things worse.Remove the hard drive from the enclosure (it could be a little tricky) and then trying connecting the hard drive internally to your computer. If it's a laptop either get another enclosure and try again, but I rather use the SATA on a desktop motherboard, not the USB. If you dont have a problem connecting the hard drive internally do a backup 'pronto' to another hard drive, you may not have much time.If you still have the same problem, then you are sure it's the hard drive. I hope this helps and please dont forget to rate and provide positive feedback for our fast-free support today. Thank you :D
SOURCE: Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.
the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.
an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml
download and install the software then restart your mac.
