How do i install this drive?

Unplug the power cable from your power supply and open up your computer Don't forget to wear your antistatic wrist band. Determine which drive bay you are going to install a CD-ROM into. You should pick on of the uppermost drive bays. Before you install a CD-ROM, make sure you have the proper jumper settings. Since we are only installing a single CD-ROM, set the jumpers as MASTER. The jumper settings are different for each CD-ROM drive, so consult your owner's manual so you know which pins to cover up. Once you have the jumpers set, install your CD-ROM in the computer's case. How you secure the CD-ROM in one of the uppermost drive bays depends on your case. Some CD-ROM drives have to be screwed into the drive bay, while other cases come with brackets (like mine) to attach to the CD-ROM drive so that it slides into the drive bay and locks in place.

Connect the power to the back of the CD-ROM drive, then connect the ribbon cable to the back of the CD-ROM drive. Your ribbon cable has three connectors, one in the middle and one on each end. The middle connector is a "SLAVE" connector that is used if you would install an additional CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Connect one of the end connectors to the CD-ROM drive, and connect the other end connector to the appropriate spot on your motherboard. Note, hard drives and CD-ROM drives have the same style of connector on the motherboard. You want to connect your CD-ROM drive to the motherboard slot that isn't red or is the highest numbered of all the IDE slots.

Power on your computer after you plug it in. Your computer should recognize the new CD-ROM. If it doesn't, Click start control panel administrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click to update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver
Hope this helps

Replace the disc drive on hp pavilion notebook

1. First of all, you need to shut off your computer . To do this press the power button on the front of the computer after you have shut it down from Start> Shutdown on your start menu.

2. Unplug the power cord from your computer. This is the big black/white/grey plug that plugs into the power supply on the back of your PC.

3. Unplug the rest of the wires from the back of the computer.

4. Find a sturdy flat surface on which to work on.

5. Unscrew all screws from the back of your computer except the power supply screws. You will make a mess if you unscrew the power supply screws.

6. Open your computer up by taking the side panel off, or sliding the cover off. It might be difficult but it will come off if you have taken all the screws out.

5. Now before touching anything inside, it is a good idea to hook up to an anti-static wrist strap. If you dont have an anti-static wrist strap, just touch the side of the computer where it is metal to deshock yourself. Then when you touch the inner components you wont risk damaging any of them.

7. Find the CD-Rom drive, it should be about 1.5 inch thick 5 inches wide, and 6 inches long. Unplug all plugs from the back of the cd-rom drive, there should be an IDE (wide) plug, a cd plug (small) and a power plug (medium).

8. Once you find the CD-Rom drive, find the screws holding it onto the chassis. unscrew those screws on both sides of the Cd-rom drive. Be careful not to unscrew any screws holding the cd-rom drive together.

9. Now, you just have to remove the cd-rom drive, carefully by sliding it either forward or backward. Check the jumpers on your new cd-rom before moving to the next step. A typical cd-rom drive should be set on slave if it is using the same IDE cable on the same cable.

10. Now that you've removed the cd-rom drive the next step is to install your new CD-rom drive. To do this, simply slide the cd-rom drive in from the front of the computer, controls facing forward. Plug all the plugs back into the cd-rom and screw everything back into place.

Unable to detect or use cd rom

Possible solutions are:
1. A problem is CD is conflicting with a hard drive --- On the back of each of the older IDE hard drives and CD ROMS are jumpers. They denote if the unit is a "MASTER", "SLAVE" or "AUTOMATICLY CONFIGURED". If they are set wrong the CD-ROM will not appear. You would also notice the computer would boot slowly. A quick check of the bios would reveal the jumper settings.
2. The Bios could be set wrong
3. The CD-ROM could be bad.
4. The CD-ROM could have the power or data cable not seated right.
5. The power supply could be out on this leg. Try another leg of the octopus for power.
This data is assuming you have a IDE CD-ROM and Windows XP or Vista.
If you have a older version of Windows or a MAC than it could be other things wrong.

Good Luck

Well you tried everything I would have recommended. I bet you anything it fried a cap or two on the motherboard- most likely will have to be replaced. Btw most batteries need to be removed overnight for it to completely reset.

Keeps repeating media test failure check cable

This sounds like a hard drive failure. If you know how to get at the drive, with the battery and the power supply removed, remove the hard drive and plug it back in. Do this 2 or 3 times. This is called reseating and cleans the contacts. If you continue to get the same message, your hard drive is bad.

No monitor display

Hi, first verify motherboard BIOS jumpers if it's on right position, if the board has an integrated video card, remove the pci e video carnd and test with the inside one.
If you have more than one DDR memory, use them one by one.
Do this with all components desconected, like hard disk, dvd-cd rom...
If no video display, try with another power supply and all components desconected.
If you got no video the motherboard could be damaged.

Possible power supply problem

Open your computer case and disconnect/remove any hard drives, cd-rom/dvd drives, take out any extra cards installed (except video card unless you have onboard then take out the video card too) and all but one stick of ram. Turn the computer on
- if it turns on, plug in each item back one at a time turning back on and off each time ( power trip will cause the pc to not turn on)
- if you smell anything weird from the PSU unit DO NOT try anything further, replace the unit.
- if you have overclocked your computer, use the jumper on the board and reset your bios
In the event you need to replace your PSU unit if Antec is an option, go with that. They are very stable.

Computer keeps rebooting

-Try setting your BIOS to the manufacturers ?safe? mode or reset to factory defaults. -I would test the processor and memory in another working PC if possible. I?ve had both cause this in the past. -If no luck still then remove the hard drive, CD, floppy, the extra memory (it might be a MB socket problem). Make this as basic a machine as possible to remove other variables. -Try testing the video card in another working PC. Let us know how it goes, I?ll ponder one this some more tonight.
