DVD/VHS Combo unit Panasonic DMR-ES35V - seemingly entirely non-functional

I suspect the answer is that it's just dead, but here we go anyway. We have had this unit from rather a number of years ago, recorded several vhs to dvd successfully, and then it stopped working entirely. When I power it up it cycles through "Hello, setup, ch 3", but there is no sound from the unit at all - nothing seems to power up or start other than the display. It's thrown the F04 and F06 errors, but I've cleared those. They reproduce any time I try to put in a tape, which the unit doesn't recognize nor do any of the gears engage to intake the tape. The DVD tray is unresponsive to anything either. It feels like none of the actual components is receiving power, but I can't identify anything wrong with the internal connections (I've taken it apart to a point). Anyone have any suggestions?

It is a complex unit made moreso as it is part digital and part analogue. The best advice is to take it to a Panasonic dealer or at least try to obtain a service/repair manual before even thinking about tinkering with it.

Is the Remote Control sensor in direct fluorescent lamp light or other strong
sources of light?
Press unit POWER button down over 7 seconds. The POWER indicator goes
out. If the Power was On, the screen will also disappear. After 5 seconds, turn
Power On and operate unit normally. If the steps above do not restore normal
operation, disconnect then reconnect the AC plug and turn the power On.

If that does not work, Panasonic offers free tech support 6 days a week 1-800-211-7262 (pana).

SOURCE: getting an U99 error with

The U99 error is a "general communications problem". Were you trying to switch sources when you were recording? You shouldn't to avoid this error. That's what we did with my Uncles unit.

My Panasonic dmr-es35v has decided to cease recording, and makes loud grinding noises, any ideas, reset?

You can try a reset, but I doubt it would do much good. The loud grinding noises and failure to record sound to me like the DVD-RAM drive has had it. This sadly is not a cheap part to replace, and there's the issue of fitting/alignment/firmware upgrade etc.

Uneconomical for a model that is over 4 years old (since it has no digital tuner).

However, if you are prepared to spend a small fortune on a workshop repair/replacement DVD drive, go ahead, but I warn you it could cost as much as, if not more than the price of a new VHS/DVD recorder combo unit.

Cannot record from cable box dvr to vhs tape

DVRs have embedded digital rights functionality to prevent you from doing what you are try to do. In addition the VCR has logic to respond to that and prevent recording by blocking the signal.

That is likely why you cannot get a signal.

Need help

I have the same model, i pressed Function key(on remote), enter, using up and down arrow keys, select Setup, Remote control code, press 1,2 or 3, then enter. The code on the unit has been set. You must use the same code for the remote control by pressing enter and hold for about 2 seconds at the same time pressing corresponding 1,2 or 3 you selected for unit. This makes the unit and remote compatible with each other. you only change this code if you have other panasonic products that respond to this same remote control. hope that helps.
