Sony Trinitron TV. My DVD/Blu-ray stopped working so I bought a new one. I didn’t think to check the connection requirements and found out that the new player had only an HMDI port instead of component video outputs. So I purchased an adapter cable and I have good audio but there are only horizontal dashes and wavy lines. Can I adjust this? I’ve tried altering picture aspects in the video menu with no luck

An almost complete guess that you are feeding digital into a tv that is incapable of processing it.

HDMI is digital only and an adaptor lead won't convert the signal to analogue. Digital to analogue converters are available but how successful they are I have no experience...

SOURCE: Component Video inputs do not work

I started back in the day of tubes. A family would have one set and it would be a 19" black and white. There are different resolutions now. The components probably do work, but, they don't pass the 480i signal. The satelite converter's analog signal needs to be set to 480p and the DVD needs to be set to progressive if it does have that setting. If the DVD is not a progressive scan DVD, then, the only inputs that it will show on is the analog signal. Some of the dish converters have a switch on the face for changing the resolution. If yours doesn't then put it in an analog source and go to the menu and change it there. Then move it to the component input. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: the HDMI "input" ports damage output ports of connecting devices

i know this sounds stupid, but have you "toggled" or "played" with the HDMI cables? are they the same manufacturer? HDMI channel connections are very fickle. If just one connection is not exactly correct, they go to a limp, no go status. Since they run at such a minimal voltage, i can't see them "blowing" the outputs on the devices.however....if your cable has a serial type output for video only, I would connect the hdmi convertor to it and see if it works.

I have a 5 year old KLH DVD player. I had it hooked up through AV cable to a 6 year old SONY Trinitron 37" TV & it worked fine. I am now trying to hook it up to a new Westinghouse flat screen TV...

double check the wires are in the correct connections on both the tv and dvd player also the KHL dvd player may need to be put in progressive scan. Usually the red wire for video and the one for audio get plugged into the wrong input and causes this issue
