If it can recognize some discs then that cd may be faulty, or if it is unable to see any discs then that unit has a problem.
You say its brand new, some machines have "transit screws" to remove but I did not see any mention in its instruction book.
So its possible the mechanism or laser unit is faulty or damaged in some way for that I would refer back to where you bought it or the service company for Onkyo, as you will be at risk if you tried to fix it yourself as you will lose out on warranty.

The unit can not read the discs. It will search through all 6 positions then quit. Try opening up the unit and cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. Update this with your results.

Hi,
You're tray may be opened with a belt, maybe it's slipping over the plastic wheel.
Good luck,
Gerard

The only possibility that comes to mind is that it may be causing a short somehow when the carousel gets to that position, maybe a broken solder joint. Another possibility is that there may be a foreign object stuck inside the player such as another disc that lost it's position.
