I have turned my worn-out Motorola HT820 ear pads inside out and have cut off the excess parts of the edges. This worked just fine for me. Obviously the ear pads are not as soft as they used to be, though there're not as thick as well.
Visit nearest Verizon store that has a repair center and they will usually replace it for free. I did this and they actually exchange the whole headset for a new one. They were just out of the over the ear piece. Hope this helps.
