SOURCE: Garmin Mobil XT starts, but

Worked for me on a Samsung i780 I had that problem once when I was using the Garmin Mobile XT ... googled about it .... some said had to hard reset .... stumbled upon one simple solution ...... sometimes the accumulated SMSes in our Sam i780 can cause that problem ( I still cant figure out the relationship with sms and garmin ...hehe ). Since I started deleting my sms I never had a problem with Garmin not loading up.

SOURCE: GPSMap 172c Can not read Garmin Data Card

I have the Sounder 178C. It will only work with 128 Mb Cards (or smaller). It does not work with the 256Mb Cards - says "Reading Card" forever.

Per Gramin, I had to buy the 128 Mb card and DVD map update. Then program the card with a USB data programmer to make it work.

Updating Handheld/Portable Devices If your device has removable batteries, such as 2 AA batteries or a lithium-ion battery pack, then it is a handheld/portable device. You can update your device software for free using WebUpdater and a compatible cable.
Updating Fixed Mount Devices If your device needs to be hard-wired to your boat's power supply, then it is a fixed mount device. You can update the software by inserting a data card containing a software update bundle into your device.
You have 2 options for obtaining the update bundle:
  1. Do it yourself: Download the free software update bundle to a data card (SD™ card and card reader or Garmin Data Card and Garmin Data Card reader required).
  2. Purchase the software update bundle on a preloaded data card.
Get the software and instructions here:

How to transfer data from my garmin 76c to my new garmin 640. I used easygps to get the data from my garmin 76c. I used easygps to send the waypoints to the new garmin 640. i see the data in the GPX...

i would try a direct drag n drop or copy/paste via the file explorer.
first check to see if the files are indeed in the corresponding folder on the 640. if they are then look for a setting on the 640.

Hi Jwatkins99,

Depending upon the model of your Garmin, these tips should still apply. If your unit uses SD cards for maps, try deleting all other country maps, including Canada and Mexico, if you don't plan on going there. You should do a backup of the SD card data if possible. Use the computer for this. I usually backup the maps then delete some of the larger maps on the opposite coast or side of the country...if I don't plan on visits soon.

If you have external data in your units main memory, try clearing some of that out using your USB hookup to your computer. If your maps are on the main memory, be careful not to get into those Folders (Directories to us Nerds) and inadverently delete the software programming for the GPS unit.

Also, if you're using SD cards, your unit may allow you to use something larger than a 2-4 GB card. Then you should have plenty of memory.

Let me know if this helps. Thanks.

Regards, Bill

Lost maps

You do not give very much information to go on.
Perhaps you have downloaded some data such as routing or some other details from your computer via "MapSource". If so AND you have a mini SD card in the GPS, you have overwritten the SD card with the data from MapSource ...the map data on the SD card is now gone!
But the MapSource Data remains.
If you have copied the original data on the SD card, just copy and paste to re-place it.
If NOT you will need to contact Garmin to get a new SD data card.

What you have to do to prevent this in the future is to temporarily remove the Data Card from the Garmin GPS, then download the MapSource data from your computer. Then the MapSource Data goes to the GPS on-board memory.

I need help installing a map onto a gramin sat nav

No. They are refering to maps sent from the computer to the Garmin device. Maps are not transferred off the SD card to the unit. Simply insert the SD card into the device and the Garmin will read the maps from the card.
to double check follow these steps
  1. Power on the unit with the card in
  2. Press Tools
  3. Press Settings
  4. Press Map
  5. Press Info (or map info)
This page should list out both your UK and Ireland maps(old as dirt) and your new Benelux and France maps as well

NEED MAP DATA CARD FOR GARMIN GPSMAP 180

I have 2 data cards for Garmin gpsmap 180 and working well.I got this offshore boat from Tallahasse 3 wks ago that has a built in Garmin gps 180 with 2 data cards on it and I have no use for it because I have the boat in Texas now. Don't know if this is the right one that you need, all I know is that these 2 cards are programed for Florida gulf.I can ask the previous owner of the boat about the details of these 2 cards. I'm willing to trade it for a data card for the lower gulf preferably from Brownsville, Tx. to Louisiana or anything that will cover Port Isabel, Port Mansfield, Port Aransas. You can e-mail me at odfishing101@yahoo.com or call me at (956) 240-8420 .My name is Oliver.
