The phone is nearly stock, but the settings menu appears more limited than I'd think it would and apps have been installed on it. The screen is constantly turning off when the front camera (and/or sensor in that area) is covered at all). This is really inconvenient and quite frustrating.

SOURCE: Touchpad minimizes screen
Double check your settings for the touch pad. It could be set to do that under one of the settings. Or something internally could have gotten jogged or internally moved. If that is the case there isn't much you could do unless you got someone to look inside of it for you.
if the phone is a model q9c then the code is 000000 if it is a model qa30 then code is the last 4 numbers of your phone number

Hi Andrew, I have the exactly same problem, started last night... i almost did hard reset and then i see that you the same problem on the same day... maybe it's a "Market" issue??
i also have two updates available, and when i try to run the update i get the same "installation error" and the app turn to "free" instead of the "update available", when in fact the app is still there (installed)...

Go into your settings->defaults->change the default launcher back to the stock one that came with your phone.
That should prevent it from trying to load TwLauncher
