SOURCE: Switching out a hard drive for a Gateway M675
What you're looking for is an IDE PATA (UDMA/100) drive, you can however use a SATA to IDE adapter if you want to use the SATA drive. Most likely you'll have to get a power adapter cord for the SATA drive also as your machine's power supply probably doesn't have one. You're going to be better off just using an IDE drive.

If your board is not supporting the 2gb memory module, it won't make any difference by upgrading the BIOS.
well flashing bios is not an easy task as it includes few steps to deal with... still if u wanna do it, then follow the site. Hope it helps u out...

Have you tried to boot it up without the battery in it?
