Your description suggests a part blockage or restriction in the fuel line or perhaps the fuel tank breather isn't allowing air into the tank causing a depression...

Carb. float must be stuck open. First if you have no fuel in the tank it must all be in the crankcase.Drain the oil and refill and also check the carb as the float has to be sticking open. Hope this will help you. Donnyb60

SOURCE: Can't keep mower running without consistently pushing the primer.

It sounds like there is water in the gas. The only way to remedy this is to take the carb off of the gas tank and replace the diaphragm, there is a small reservoir between the tank and carb...clean with WD-40 to remove water

SOURCE: 158cc yard machine, starts then dies.

Your fuel tank and carb need to be removed, both cleaned and replace pump diaphragm between carb and tank. If you want to do it yourself, let me know and I;ll tell you how. Not a difficult job. Dwain

Primer bulb not pumping fuel into carb, pull it out, no splits etc. Once I get fuel in it starts and runs fine??

Probably a valve in the priming system is stuck. It allows fuel to flow into the bulb from the tank, the valve should close then and allow the bulb pressure to spray into the carburetor. Could also be the opening into the carburetor from the prime bulb is blocked.

Priming may not be the problem. First try putting some duct tape over the hole in the primer button. then try priming and subsequently starting it. This could indicate a need for a new air filter...I know it doesn't make sense, but it will probably be the answer to your problem. It was with mine although a different type of mower.

Can't get gas to start primer pump not working

Sounds like you have an air leak in the fueling system and air, not fuel is being sucked in to the primer, check the fuel line and primer pump gaskets or bubble (if it is the primer bubble type)

My Craftsman Mowe rmodel# 917.376152 will not hold a prime?

This is a push mower. It does not have a fuel filter, so after about two years, small debris gets into the gas and then gets onto the carburetor. I added a small in-line filter to help. You will need to take the fuel line off and drain the fuel tank to flush then take the float bowl off and try clearing the passages with carburetor cleaner from the top down to flush. Reassemble and off you go.

My Toro 20016 will start but will only run for a minute. If I hold the primer button down all the way it will continue to run but will die if I release. I have cleaned the float and there are no leaks in...

You will need to clean out the jet on the bottom of the carburetor. The fuel is not being sucked in to engine. Check the needle and seat to make sure fuel is flowing in to the carburetor.

you need spark, gas and timing to make it run. have you checked spark? sounds like you are getting gas. did you hit anything hard with the blade while mowing? this can throw it out of time.
