Verify the safety key is present and functioning. Most machines use a magnet and any strong magnet will be enough to close the circuit.

Most treadmills meet there demise from a faulty lower control board under the hood. It can light and be mostly functional, but still have issues. Boards are not very cheap but are very easy to install.

Search for options on fitnessrepairparts.com.

Make sure to take an image of the original board to copy the wire location/connections.

Boards often go bad from an array of issues, but verify the condition of the underside of the walking belt is not black and the deck is not worn. Lack of lubricant and too much friction on the belt system usually overloads the board with heat and damages the board.

SOURCE: problems with my proform 397 treadmill

Dear Sir:

Please do the following:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH3ctwTvdVo&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=inR6gJ0_37w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF3OyQ3HwfU&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oeXTKqWECw&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPI6dFJCUA4

To usethese instructions, you need to have a familiarity with electricity and aworking knowledge of a voltage multimeter. With all of these tests, USEEXTREME CAUTION!!! Never let the voltage ground directly to any part ofthe treadmill or your leads ground while you
are testing voltage.

1)To begin, set your volt meter to AC volts. We are going totrace the power from the wall outlet through the
treadmill to see where it ends.

2)
With the treadmill unplugged, test the wall outlet. You should have from 115 to125 VAC. Optimally, you will
have at least 120 VAC.

3)Follow the power leads from the power cord to the lead ends. With the treadmill unplugged, connect your
meter to the lead ends. Plug the treadmill in and check your reading. It shouldbe the same as your reading
from the wall outlet.

4) Continue this process with the electrical system, following theleads, as they pass through, breakers, fuses,
and the like.

5)Where the power flow ends is where your problem is. Sometimesit will be in a bad connection, sometimes
it will be in a shorted breaker or blown fuse, at times it may be as simple asa safety switch not working
properly, or it may be a major problem with a component.
5) In some cases, components work in tandem (i.e.- a controllermay need a signal from the console
computer to release voltage to the motor)
TESTING FUSES, BREAKERS, WIRING, AND SWITCHEST

1) One of the most common problems with power outages is problemswith fuses, breakers, wiring, or switches.
2) If your treadmill is equipped with a safety switch, set yourvolt meter to continuity. Touch your test leads together to make sure you
are getting a closed circuit. With the treadmill unplugged, back the leads offthe safety switch, usually near the upper display computer.
With the safety key out, test the switch. It should be open. Push the safetykey in. Your circuit should be closed. If this tests ok, move to
the next step.
3) While testing for voltage, you can unplug your treadmill andtest the fuses, breakers, and wiring harnesses. Sometimes a breaker may
have shorted open and not tripped. Test these components individually. You wanta closed circuit on all of themSincerely. God bless you. If you need further assistance, please reach me.

How do I determine if the drive motor on Proform Crosswalk 397 needs replacement.

Unplug the motor from the board and plug it in to an 18 volt drill battery to see if it runs. It more than likely will and this means the motor control board is bad. You can get lucky on ebay occasionally and get one in the 50-60 dollar price range but don't go any higher then that amount. These boards are built to fail and to replace them new costs more then the treadmill is worth. Mine had a blown capacitor only and I replaced it with exact same and still no luck. Junked it and wont replace unless I buy it used and dirt cheap. Good luck.
