Philips Classic 388 pocket recorder. Record button will not depress. Everything else working ok. Replaced batteries.

Try taking off the left black rubber stripping and see if the button underneath is lined up correctly. Perhaps take a look inside to see that all the contacts are good.

If the red light does not blink while you speak, then the internal microphone is bad or a wire has broken off. If it is blinking, the record playback changeover switch is bad. This part is difficult to replace. Repair cost should be around $75.

Check that you have not knocked the record tab out of the tape you are using.  Try a new tape.

This is the end-of-tape signal. Try turning the cassette over. If this does'nt work then there is no tape drive due to the belt coming loose or breaking.
