What speakers do you have connected to the SA-AK220? This is the main unit of the SC-AK220. WIthout the SB-AK220 speakers or another set of speakers connected to the black and red connections for the Right and Left speakers on the back of the SA-AK220, you will not get any sound output.
I hope this helps. The manual for this mini-audio system is available from ManualsLib: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/117595/Panasonic-Sc-Ak220.html .

This sounds like an electrical problem in the speaker circuitry - between the speaker(s) and the control knob.

hello it sound like the output ic may be in trouble you may have just dry joint on the ic which just resolder it . or there could be a capacitor leaking or they may have swelled up in which you will have to replace. it's best to do some visual checks first i'e look for any burnt parts any capacitor with bulging tops

Make sure this is happening from two sources such as a dvd player and a gaming system as well. If it happens from two sources the speakers are more than likely not working or the sound board will need to be replaced. A cheap way of getting around a repair is by getting a surround sound and running a cablebox, dvd player, and/or your gaming system directly to the surround sound system using it for sound instead of the tv.
