Can my memorex mvdp1075 connect to computer to read a data disk?

The light signals a connection between the hard disk inside the Traveldrive to its case. If it fails that means that the hard disk is dead. The unit has died, junk it and buy a new one, hard disks can't be repaired.

try different manufacture DVD. TDK, Memorix, imation, even the store brand.
usually the store brand works the best.

As for your question of disk vs hard drives, DVD's and CD's that are burnt from a computer are more easily damaged then hard drive data. The best idea if you are looking for a good backup solution is an external hard drive in my opinion. There are many opinions on this very subject so you will receive many opinions. There are no wrong answers just opinions and personal preference. Another solution you can try is an external HD using a program such as Symantec Ghost and create a full image of your hard drive.

You will never be able to recover the information. Sony's system really will have problems with third party brands; there is particular engineering that makes this so. In my shop (Sony authorized), I have seen this problem many times. If you insist on using other brands, get used to problems. As your laser assembly wears it will become more problematic.
