Why Do My Plumbing Pipes Make A Knocking Noise? November 10, 2018 Plumbing
We've all heard strange noises around our homes and most of the sounds are harmless. But if you hear banging water pipes, this could be a sign of a serious plumbing problem. The top three causes of banging plumbing pipes are because of a water hammer, copper pipes or too high of water pressure. These sounds can be heard after a water supply is shut off, while the water is running and randomly throughout the day or night. Here are more in-depth reasons why your plumbing pipes are banging and remedies for those noises.

Water Hammer

When running water and is suddenly shut off, the rushing water has no place to go and slams against the shut-off valve. The sound you hear is called a water hammer. It may not sound like a big deal but a water hammer can potentially damage joints and connections in the pipes.
To address the water hammering, you'll need to inspect all visible piping while the noise is present to see if there are any loose or vibrating parts that need securing. Next, you'll need to check the air chamber. The air chamber is the vertical pipe located near your faucet and is often in the wall cavity that holds the plumbing connected to your sink or tub. The purpose of the chamber is to absorb the shock of fast-moving water that is suddenly stopped. Unfortunately, over time it loses its effectiveness and it will need to be replenished. To do that, turn off the water supply to your house. Open the faucets to drain out any water. Then turn the water supply back on. The incoming water will flush the air out of the pipes but not out of the air chamber. The air supply will then be restored to your air chamber.

Copper Pipes

You may also hear banging sounds coming from your plumbing if your home has copper pipes. Copper pipes tend to expand as hot water passes through them. If these pipes are in a tight area, they will expand and noisily rub against other structural features.
In most cases, expanding and contracting copper pipes will not cause a leak. And unless you are remodeling, there's no reason to add additional padding around these pipes. The simple solution would be to slightly lower the water temperature setting on your hot water heater.

Water Pressure

Another reason for banging water pipes is that the water pressure is too high. Most modern homes have pressure regulators that mount where the water supply enters the house. You may consider having one installed if your home doesn't have one. Too much water pressure could damage any water-supplied appliances like your washing machine or dishwasher. It's recommended that water is delivered to your home at no lower than 40 and no greater than 80 psi (pounds per square inch).

SOURCE: kenmore washing machine 80 series

check for kinks in the pipe or restrictions to the flow in the pipes before it gets to the washer, if all is ok then check the filter on the outside of the water connector on the machine for dirt

if you confirm all is clear and the flow of water is not the problem before the machine, replace the cold water solenoid

Yeah you need to replace the water valve. To get to it you need to remove the cabinet on the newer direct drive models, If yours has a rear access panel then you simply pop the top to get to the valve after removing the hoses. Fairly simple job. Here is a good website for direct drive coupling replacement . It shows you how to open the cabinet. http://repair2000.com/coupling.html
GVI 151 is the generic part that fix all belt drive models. Direct drive will need its own little water valve buy hay it ain't but 20 bucks.
For a better explanation post you model number in the comment box and I will research it further for you amigo.

SOURCE: Loud banging noise durning washing machine spin cycles.

First plug off the wall. Open the machine from behind to examine if any shock-absorbers(known as dampers) or springs have come off or broken. Your dealer could help with spares. But you could do the job yourself.

SOURCE: Kenmore 80 Series washing machine - loud banging at end of spin

With the lid open, set the cycle to spin and press the lid switch button with a pen. Wait until the drum gets to full speed and release the lid switch. If the drum makes a knocking/ thumping noise and doesn't stop spinning within 2-3 seconds, the basket drive block is worn and needs to be replaced. (The basket drive block is located on the gearcase drive shaft, under the tub and agitator) If this has been happening for a long time you may need to replace the brake and drive tube assembly as well.

Good luck!

I have been have a loud vibrating almost rattling noise coming from my shower when the show head is engaged. Only when its engaged. It starts about 5-10 minutes into the shower. Does anyone have an idea of...

You may have to high a water pressure. This may have been disguised in the past by the mains tap being partially closed (deliberately). The plumber will have opened the mains tap fuuly after repairing the leak. Alternatively you have water hammer caused by loose pipework. The plumber may have removed a pipe clip in order to repair the leak.

How do I stop the loud noise when any of the hot taps are used?

I take it your water pressure is high. If so, then you need to have this pressure reducer installed because the water valves in the machine open and shut instantly, which means it lets too much water at once and when the valve closes or opens it makes a vibrating noise. See if you can check how fast the water is flowing at the tap first. Most washing machines make some noise one way or another, be it from tub spinning to rattling and clanking or water flowing in the tub, etc. From your description, sounds like you have a high pressure pipelines in your house, a reducer is necessary. Alternatively, try and turn down the mains tap at the front of your house, where the meter is, so that less water pressure rushes inside the house pipelines. I did that and it's a little quieter.

Can't address other issues, but WATER pressure should be 40 to 80(I'd say 70)lbs. tester at home D for $10-15. Goes on hose Bibb outside, or at washing machine cold valve.

Water pipe feeding this froze, pipe was repaired, unit filled with water, no leaks won't agitate something smells hot or burnt, vibration low noise comes from unit, won't pump wter from tub

remove the water pump. it may be broken by water freezing iside. also make sure you dont use the washer if ambient temp in room is below freezing. freezing will damage water valves, pumps and freeze grease inside the gearcase.

Tub tab vibrates internally when hot water is turned on and off

You have a partially plugged filter screen the the internal cartage.
Another possibility is that the water piping was not provided with air chambers and the piping is vibrating.

Moen shower valve turns on full to cold water but flow becomes minimal when valve is turned to warm/hot. not getting enough warm water to shower. can this be fixed without rplacing the valve?

yes and no. Find hot water heater and insure cold water supply valve is open all the way. check to see if there is a hot water supply value and that its open all the way. If you replace shower value over iron pipe on the hot side it is corroded up replace pipe and value. If copper, find hot side, find value and open it up.

Automatic washing machine plumbing requirement

The automatic clothes washing machine counts on a pressured water system - like what is provided in a town / city or from a well that has a pressure system to deliver water at pressure like when you open a valve for a bath tub, sink or shower.
You need to have a plumber provide valve/faucets for both hot and cold water. The valves are sometimes called a "hose bibb" with a threaded end that the hoses connect to and then are connected to the back of the washer. When the hoses are connected and the valves are open, the automatic washer will open a solenoid valve when the time is right to allow water to flow in, then closees. Some owners keep the hose bibb valves open forever after they connect the washer, others close the valves after they are done washing all loads for the day/week.
You will also need a drain provided that connects into the house plumbing. The Whirlpool Duet provides the drain hose from the washer which drops into the pipe the plumber provides. It is important that the drain pipe allow air to move past the washers drain hose, to allow proper draining.
Hope that helps. Please post back how things come out, OK?

Shower/tub combo hot water problem

Hello,
There is a restriction in the faucet or the piping to the faucet on the hot wtaer side...this will be very hard to find and fix... The shower uses less water so it will get hot.... the tub spout allows more water flow so you cannot get the water more then warm...

Take the faucet apart and blow out all the passage ways with air... also run some water from the piping while the guts are out of the faucet, to flush the piping...
Hopefully this will fix you up...

Installed a new oak brook collection tub and shower faucet and no water comes out.

You may have to disassymble the faucet to see if there is something that is stuck in there or that the assymbly internally is stuck in the closed position.
