Model xl3022. Can it sew leather? - Brother Sewing Machines

A lot of domestic machines can sew leather, but it probably depends how thick the leather is and how much you "love" your machine. Sewing heavy fabrics like leather can damage the machine.

According to the manual, you can use this machine to sew some leather items. Use only the straight stitch or simple zigzag stitch. Use a mercanized or silk thread with a size 14 needle. Make sure to use 1/2 pressure on the presser foot.

Be careful sewing thick materials with a domestic machine. Even though a lot of machines are supposedly able to sew thick leather & fabrics, it could damage your machine in the long run. If you value your machine, you might want to find a second machine (used mechanicals, older Singers, etc., probably work better for this purpose) to sew thick fabric. Save your nice primary machine for more conventional uses.

regarding your inquiry about JUKI machine model DDL-8700 , first your machine type was what ? DDL-8700/SS ( for light to medium material , DDL-8700/HS ( for jeans and can use to sew light to medium lather, type of needle is DBx1, size for lather was 18 and you can use thread number #30 and #20. one more thing you want to change your presser foot to teflon presser foot ( please see attached photo for that presser foot you want to buy.

Do not use a needle bigger than a size 16 otherwise a thicker needle will hit the raceway, use a good mercerized threads no thicker than 40
