I have a Craftsman 15.6 drill, model #973.114250. I can no longer charge either battery for it. The batteries are Craftsman #1311444 and the charger is #982031-001. When I place the battery (either one) into the charging stand, the red charging light comes on, but then fades off within 5 seconds. No charging is then taking place. Did both batteries fail at the same time or is it the charging station?
Test the batteries with a multimeter that will tell you if the batteries are shot. You can do the same with the charger, test it with a multimeter but I don't recommend it unless you know what you are doing because you will be live testing it.

1. Your batteries may be too old
2. Some of your batteries cells are bad
3. The charger may not be producing full output
Try dis-assembly and check each cell individually-Bad cells can be replaced at a fraction of cost of battery replacement.

Try working the switches Low/High, Forward/Reverse. Sometimes, the battrey can hang up a bit in the charger, resulting in a low, or no charge. Try a different battery, or recharge your existing battery, making sure that it is firmly seated in the charger.

the battery's are most likely dead, (like the real dead) after many uses of rechargeable battery's they slow stop holding charge at all, make sure when you get a new rechargeable battery you fully charge it once and fully discharge it once this will increase batterys life time

try reversing the chuck, if the gears have "climbed" over each other what ever you do will have to be backwards.does it feel locked from the gearbox or the back end? the brushes can also lock the shaft up.
otherwise faulty unit, send it back
