The contacts for the negative within the flash are notorious for coming off. look for a black dot where a metal pickup should be. I added a folded up small piece of aluminum foil and is powered right up.

I had the same problem. You locked your flash by mistake if you have a lock symbol on your LCD. Press the ON/OFF & Sel buttons simultaneously & the lock symbol will disappear. Then reset your unit by pressing Mode & ON/OFF simultaneously for 3 second & you are good to go!

I am going through lithium 9x's batteries VERY fast with my SB-600. The flash is about 5 or 6 years old. When I try to change the batteries they're so hot you can barely touch them. When I do Weddings I...

Do not use the Gary's or white dome junk on the flash.
It will overheat the flash, warped the Fresnel Lens and make 4AA very hot.

You are bouncing your flash up in the ceiling /or sideways.

You are using reduction camera & zooming at wide angle with also high f stop.

Buy a real pro flashes like the following:
1. ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3
2. ATG Gold Cyclops
3. ATG Gold Qflash
4. Metz 76MZ-5
5. Quantum Qflash

Even the claimed pro Nikon SB-910/900/800 are junks & overheat, shutdown when you pushed them.

How to install a Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Basically, you put batteries into the flash, put it into the flash mount on the top of the camera, turn everything on, select a flash mode, and start shooting.
The flash comes with a detailed manual describing its operation. There is a section in the camera manual describing the various flash modes. The SB-700 is fully compatible with the Nikon iCLS system, which includes the D3100.

Since you asked a general question, I can only give you a general answer. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask them.

I have a Nikon SB 600 and it wont turn on any more (I tried new batteries ;-) ) I sent it back to Nikon and they say it needs a new motherboard. Its one month out of warranty and so its gonna cost the same...

I would expect it to cost less than a new one, if not - buy a new one.

When repaired they will replace all the damaged parts and wiring with new, so that should fix it, and you'd have a t least a 60 day warranty to test it.

If you invest in a better flash like the SB-900 you will have more power to use if needed, if not needed you will have a faster flash and recycle rate, greater distance and a more robust flash that has some protection circutry to protect the flash from over heating. Using this larger flash may eliminate you wearing out another SB-600.

Nikon sb-600

Does the flash turn on when you push the battery door down? By push it, I mean HARD... If so, you might be able to cure this by getting some jewelry screwdrivers and flexing IN the metal contacts in the battery compartment door to increase the battery contact.. just be careful not to break the metal (but if you do, a replacement battery cover is about $16)
