SOURCE: replacing engine. Briggs 26hp on GT5000 garden tractor

Unfortunately, there is no single manual for this. It depends entirely on what crankshaft the OEM requested be used in the engine. You need to find out the diameter of the crankshaft and any threading to it, direction of the threading, etc. From there, a replacement can usually be found pretty easily. That or contact Briggs customer support (number in your owners manual) with the Model, Type and Code numbers off the engine. From this information they can see how the engine was outfitted for that OEM. Horsepower tells them nothing as those ratings and stickers are often replaced by the OEM and often NOT the information Briggs sends out on the engine.

SOURCE: removal of the electric(coil) clutch that engages

Problem has b een resolved. I found a pair of channel-loks narrow enough to get down on the back side of the motor. Was able to get a good hold on the coupling that drives the hydraulic pump and loosen the bolt that held the old PTO electric clutch. Once the bolt was removed, it dissassembled very easily. Installation of the new clutch, although it is different from old one, went well also. Be sure to install new unit as one unit,(not in separate pieces).

Thanks for you concern, as I was at a standstill for awhile. Thanks for being there.

SOURCE: Do you have a wiring

Generally starters ground through the engine, so that only leaves the positive wire. That one comes from the starting solinoid. Starting solinoid gets power from the battery. Anyway these wires are the biggest ones on the machine including the negative/ground wire from the battery.

I hope this helps.

Are you pushing in the clutch? If yes, then it might be the clutch switch. Most mowers need the clutch in to start. I have wasted many hours by not knowing that.

Starter motor wont engage checked brushes and movement small what i persume soleniod attached the side of starter just clicks

Alot of the time a clicking sound indicates a dead battery. It happens when there isn't enough power to fully engage the starter but just enough to engage solenoid. I would check your battery and all connections, including ground wires, battery wires and solenoid wires. Take a wire brush to them and clean them up and reinstall them. If that doesn't work, remove your starter and bench test it by hooking up a good battery to the lead that solenoid goes to and ground the other. If it passes the bench test your solenoid probably needs replaced. If it fails the problem is in your starter. Good luck! FYI, remove battery leads while removing starter and other wires for safety when cleaning.

Valve adjustment

Sounds like a bad ground, bad wire connection or a starter going bad. The most overlooked thing when it comes to wiring are ground connections. Remove grounds and clean with a wire brush or emery cloth. Also, do this on solenoid, starter and battery connections too. If problem persists I would recommend rebuilding the starter. Good luck and happy wrenching!

How to diagnose a starter problem

Hi rojoby
Remove the starter, hook up the (+) Hot wire to the post of the starter, then take the ground wire(-) from the battery and ground it to the outside case of the starter...if it runs, then the starter is good...if not, replace the starter as it is faulty.
If if runs, then check/replace the starter solinoid, it could be faulty

John Deere 165 will not turn over. New battery has fuel. Engine clicks one time when I turn the key. Could this be starter or solenoid? How do I trouble shoot?

"One click" tells me it's a connection issue. Remove and wire brush the ground and battery cable connections at the battery, chassis, starter and starter solenoid.

Can not remove starter

You mean you cannont physically take it out. Is the starter drive bound up with the ring gear? If thats the case put the tractor in high gear and rock it by pushing on a rear tire to unstick the drive... Need more info.

sounds like you removed the rear cover instead of dismantling the starter from the gear side- good luck putting it together that way - you need to dismantle from the gear side so you can put the armature into the brushes with no prob -
