MFC-5440CN saved from the tip!
"Unable to Clean" message - found TrickyDicky's sltn 4 for various printers.
Went into maint mode as per sltn 4 - verified error 46.
"The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed."

Keyed in 80 - stepped through the items with "down" key and located Purge Counter.
"Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero
Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state."

This worked brilliantly - no need to tamper with any parts of the printer. Purge Counter reset did it all. Fully functional printer.

not easy and worth to fix it since ink jet printer sare cheap. New one include all the ink cartridges which are expensive too.

Waste ink pad is saturated how can i reseti cant do anything with the printer onlt turn it off
You can also try dabbing the waste pad with absorbing paper. This worked for me.

This usually means the Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink "protection" counter is nearing its limit. Once the limit is exceeded, your printer will no longer work. You can solve this by using the SSC utility - download from

and use it to reset the Protection Counter. However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. This requires the disassembly of the printer. If you decide to have a go at replacing the ink pads yourself in due course, I suggest you then post a new request for assistance.

The Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink counter has exceeded its limit. The Waste Ink Pads should be replaced as soon as possible. You can overcome this problem temporarily by using the SSC utility - download from

and reset the Protection Counter. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation. However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. Are you sure it is staurated or it just the printer showing the error. Apparently there is a usage timer in the printer firmware that will display this error after so many hours of usage. Epson has a small program to reset this error but warns that if the pad is saturated it may leak out onto you table/desk. My R220 displayed this error and I reset it with Epsons resetter program. If you are not sure of the pad, I would put something under the printer just in case it is saturated and leaks. I don't think you can buy replacement pads from Epson as they say the printer is disposable. I also don't know what material the pads are made of but I have never seen one overflo in all the years I have used Epson printers. There is always a first time so if I were resetting mine I would defininately put something under the printer to watch for leaking ink. The program to reset the ink counter is EpsonIPRUtility.A10.exe and is available at www.Epson.com
