How do you set margins - Office Equipment & Supplies

To set a margin beyond the left or right margin, move the carrier (or cursor) to that margin, press the Margin Release key, then proceed to move the carrier (or cursor) to the desired position. Then, press the Left or Right margin key to set the new margin. A beep will sound indicating the new margin has been set. When you set a new left or right margin, the previous margin is automatically cleared.

Alternatively, you can type beyond the right margin by pressing the Margin Release key and then continue typing when the carrier (or cursor) stops at the right margin. To type beyond the left margin, press the Margin Release key and then the Backspace key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the position where you want to start typing.

Remember to always use genuine Swintec ribbons and lift-off tapes for your Swintec 7040, which can be found at Swintec Typewriter Supplies .

Normally, you must set the carrier or scale where you want it set on the left then press the left margin set button. Then move the carrier to the right to where you want the right margin set and then press the right margin set button. You may have to use margin release to bypass the previously set margins. The keys used for margin control on the brothers is the ALT key just to the left of the space bar, and the #3,4,& 5 keys.

To move outside the present margin to the left, backspace to the left margin. Press the ALT and '3' keys at the same time to bypass the margin. Back space past the margin to the point where the margin is to be set. At the point you want the new left margin, press the ALT and '4' keys at the same time to set the new left margin.

To move outside the present margin to the right, spacebar over to the right margin. Press the ALT and '3' keys at the same time to bypass the margin. Then spacebar over to the point where the new right margin is to be set. Press the ALT and '5' keys at the same time to set the new right margin.

The basics are that the ALT +3 releases margins, ALT +4 sets the left margin at the point of the carrier, ALT + 5 sets the right margin at the point of the carrier.

To change or reset margins, the keys involved are the ALT key to the left of the spacebar, the #keys 3,4, & 5.

The ALT & '3' keys are used to bypass the set margins.

To bypass the left margin, move the carrier to the left margin. Press the ALT & '3' keys at the same time. Release them then backspace the carrier to the point the new margin is wanted. Press the ALT and '4' keys at the same time to set the new left margin.

To bypass the right margin, move the carrier to the right margin. Press the ALT & '3' keys at the same time. Release them and spacebar to the point where the new right margin is wanted. Press the ALT & '5' keys to set the new right margin.
The main thing to remember is to move the carrier to the point where the new margin is needed. ALT + 3 bypasses old margins, ALT + 4 sets the left margin, & ALT + 5 sets the right margin.

Move the carriage to where you want the margin, use margin release if you have to go beyond the present margin, and use the margin set key to set.
You have to reset a margin. can't just clear one.
Can set margins at each end of the typing line, then you will have no margins.

use the "margin left" key to set left margin, and the "Margin Right" key to set the right margin. Move to where you want the margin to be and press the right or left margin keys. to go beyond a margin (to set margins "outside" the current settings, press the MAR REL (Margin Release) button while at the current margin

Margins and Tabs
Margins and tabs for both Type Mode and Mem Mode are set in Type
Mode, but can be changed in Mem Mode when text is recalled for
editing. Margins and tabs are set using the typing scale which appears
on the display in Type Mode. A blinking cursor indicates the typing
position. The letter “L” indicates your left margin setting. The letter “R”
indicates your right margin setting.
NOTE: In Mem Mode, the margins and tabs used when the text
is created will be saved with the text and recalled with it,
even if they have been changed.
Margins
In Type Mode, to signal that you are near the right margin, the
typewriter will beep 5 spaces before the margin. In Mem Mode, the text
will wrap automatically when you print.
Margins are preset depending on the pitch setting, which is the number
of characters per inch. They are:
10 Pitch 12 Pitch 15 Pitch
(Pica) (Elite) (Micro)
Left Margin 12 14 18
Right Margin 72 86 108
New margin settings remain until changed again.
1. Move the Mode Selector to Type. A typing scale appears on
the display.
2. Move the cursor using the Spacebar or Back Space to the desired left
margin setting on the scale.
3. Press Margin.
4. Move the cursor using the Spacebar to the desired right margin
setting on the typing scale.
5. Press Code + Margin. A beep confirms each new margin setting.
6. You can change to Mem Mode, if desired.

I can't be for sure if these are auto set margins, but it sounds like they might be. If they are, first move the carriage as far to the right as you can. Hold the Left Margin Set (not Margin Release) lever as you move the carriage all the way to the left. Release the Margin Set Button or Lever. Now hold the Right Margin Set Button or Lever (not the Margin Release), and move the carriage all the way to the right while holding the Margin Set. Once the carriage is all the way to the right, release the Margin Set. Move the carriage to the place you want to set your left margin. Hit the Left Margin Set and then release. Move the carriage to where you want to set the right margin. Hit the Right Margin Set and release it. It gets confusing, but Margin Release does not set margins. Its sole purpose is only to bypass the margins. Hope this helps.

You must position the carrier to where you want the margin then press the left or right margin set button depending on which one you want to set. Use the margin release button to get past the current margins. You may have to use the code button with the margin button to set the margin. Lawrence

when the typewriter is first switched on the typewriter will automatically set a margin 10 or 12 spaces in,depending on which pitch setting you have. To set a margin say on 20,space-bar in to 20 on the spacing scale and then press Margin Set Key. to set a margin on say, 5 first depress the Margin release key and back-space 5 spaces in and then set then margin as before. Remember that the typewriter will "forget" the settings as soon as it is switched off.
