just a guess maybe something in the thermal head has gone bad, mechanical part, paper feed and printing reports tells me it will print from memory. So you are right, these scanner/thermal head has gone bad, at this point, aging nothing to lose, lift up the scanner and clean with thermal head with a lint-free rag and rubbing alcohol., follow the connector to the main board and try to reseat the connector, unplug machine for 30 secs, or so, and restart..may not be worth the cost of repair, vs, cost of a brand new machine. Mere suggestions, so you can try my suggestions at your own risk, certainly un ply fax machine from the wall before cleaning the thermal head, alcohol is best to use, as it dries fast, Good Luck !
Ekg machines print on thermal paper, This means that the impression is made by the print head heating the paper. If the print head is not making contact with the paper, you will get a faint tracing or no tracing at all. This needs to be adjust by a technician. Contec is located in China and we are a dealer. If you need their info or want us to look at it for you (for free) simply give us a call
All you need to do is CHANGE THE BATTERIES! This is a thermal printer that does not use ink, BUT...when the batteries are old/weak they will not generate enough voltage to heat the thermal cartridge paper properly, resulting in faint, poorly printed letters.

Driver could be corrupt. Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
Check rec. paper means that the paper may not be routed properly thro' the cutter mechanism and out thro' the machine....if it is; then the sensors that detect the paper may be dirty or faulty.
If you are using thermal paper, Turn the roll upside down (I had the same problem).
If you don't use thermal paper please ring HP on 1 300 888 423 they will tell you whats wrong for free, If the Facsimale is faulty and is under warreanty they will fix it.
