There could be several reasons why your Moen 3838 Castlebar Four Function Showerhead is suddenly gushing water from the base when in shower mode. Some possible causes include:
Clogged showerhead: If the showerhead is clogged with mineral buildup or debris, water may not be able to pass through properly, causing it to gush out of the base.
Leaky diverter valve: The diverter valve is responsible for directing water to the showerhead. If it is damaged or worn, water may leak out of the base of the showerhead.
Damaged showerhead: If the showerhead itself is damaged, water may be able to leak out of the base.
Incorrect installation: If the showerhead was not installed properly, water may leak out of the base.
Loose or damaged O-ring: An O-ring is a small ring that seals the connection between the showerhead and the water supply. If the O-ring is missing or damaged, water may leak out of the base.
It is best to check the instruction manual and troubleshoot the issue or contact Moen support if needed. If the issue is not resolved by troubleshooting, it may be best to consult a plumber or contact Moen support for further assistance.
Moen Spray Diverter Repair
First, remove head and soak in vinegar. Use toothbrush to remove scale. If this fixes your problem, ignore the following.
To repair your Moen sprayer, first pick up Moen part # 91192 diverter and a Moen #117 spout o-ring set. Remove the cap on handle, remove the screw on the interior cap and remove handle. Your spout can now be removed by pulling it straight up. Here is a pic of the part. Slide the diverter up and off the faucet post. Remove the two o-rings from the post and install only one large one and one small one onto post making sure to grease them with the silicone provided. The other small o-ring is for faucets without the spray. Discard it. Slide the new diverter down onto the post and reassemble the spout and handle assemblies. Make sure to properly engage the flat on the handle into the groove on the retainer nut when reinstalling handle..
Good luck!
If it is simply clogged, soak the head in vinegar for an hour and use a brush to clean the scale from the spray head.
