WD5000E035-55 Model I just went to plug in the usb from the hard drive and nothing. there is a blue led on the back right of the hard drive that comes on when i plug in the usb into the computer, but today nothing. I checked the plug connections and all good. unpluged everything from power and the hard drive and one by one i tried them. wall to adapter plug i get a green light on the adapter box and it stays on. then i plug adapter into the hard drive and the green light blinks 1 time and then goes out and nothing. i tried this over and over again and then i noticed that the blue light also blinks 1 time on the hard drive at the same time as the green light on the adapter. so either the hard drive is shorted out. which is a possiblity or the adapter went bad. i am thinking the adapter. saw another link about someone having a problem with the 1gb version of the WD Elements hard drive. he said it is a adapter issue. i followed the links to WD to maybe get a replacement adapter and they don't seem to sell it. it is 10pm on friday so looks like nothing until monday on the technical support. will try an email to them and see, but just wanted to let anyone out there that they are not alone in this matter. if u find a place that sells the adapter or information on how and where you got a new one let me know. thanks.

It seems u have a sata or a ide drive fitted in the casing
please open the casing and remove the raw hard drive and connect it directly yo ur computer.
it will start working .. do this if you are urgently needing to work on pc with this drive. this is a shortcut if you wish to ascess your work.
later you can on monday get your adapters checked. i dont feel adapter is faulty in your case.

Could be defective. Try swapping power cord and usb cable with know good ones. You could also plug it into a different (known working) usb port.

It is worth a try. The circuit board of the SATA to USB interface inside the drive casing is definitely fried, but the drive itself could still be alive & usable.

Switches on, but nothing happens - i.e., blue light comes on, but not the red light!

Plug the hard drive in or just wait abit. Maybe you forgot to plug the hard drive led connector in.

My hard drive just quit working. Have tested the

Ok to see if it is the drive or the USB interface, remove drive from housing, obtain a SATA/IDE to USB "Dongle" now connect up the hard drive to this, the right way around, and plug into the USB port, if the drive is good, it will self install, and show up in device manager, as a HDD. Which can be used however you want. If it doesn't show up, the drive is faulty, and unrecoverable in the usual sense.

I got this hard drive and expected it to work like

The light is on because it's getting power from the usb port, but since you closed/ignored the first attempt to install the hard drive, your computer assumes that you will install it on your own. Since you don't have a driver for it, you may want to search for one. I can provide a link for you if you need me to. I will need the make and model. Also, you will need to install it through the "back door." To do this, right click on the icon "My Computer" on your desktop and then clock "Properties." This will open up "Device Manager." There, you will see a device that will most likely have an colored exclamation point or mark on icon. Right click on the icon for your "Unknown item" and go to properties, then find where it asks you to install the driver. It may install one without telling it where to look and needing any additional drivers that Windows XP can't already access.
Good luck - and if you get stumped I can help you further.

Light doesn't turn blue at all

Plug it into another computer if possible, clear ALL files on it.
You must of been sending something to it when you flicked the switch, they would normally go off straight away.

(Backup on the other computer first)

If this does not work then you may want to see if you can see a usb stick in your USB ports. If you can it's a fault with the harddrive, nothing else you can do.

How to connect a IDE-to-USB cable to a 2.5 inch drive?

1) You will do no harm by reversing the connector, but the PC won't "see" the drive at that point (if your drive has an activity LED it will be permanently ON if the cable is reversed) 2) Most times the USB will have enough power to drive the HD all by itself, but if you are going through a hub that may not be the case. In that situation, plug the device directly into a USB port on the PC.
