There is only one type of HDMI cable (as per the standard). Perhaps the cable you purchased was not "HDMI". "DisplayPort" cables are commonly mistaken for HDMI cables.
The male connector of a typical 6ft HDMI cable looks like this:
The picture below is a typical DisplayPort cable and can be differentiated from an HDMI cable by it's single angled corner:

Some times its the power cord if you go to your local best buy you can buy one and test.. if its not just take it back ;) But I have seen lot of the these hp pavilion motherboards go out and the Bord cost so much its about the same price as buying a new laptop.
One other thing I would suggest check your warranty go to the link I provided you can check it there.

Best of luck let me know if this helps.
Do you mean only the power cable that linked the power brick with laptop was broken? Of course if you are 100% sure that's the only part that fail, you may only buy a cable. Check this link blow: http://www.chargerbuy.com/cable-connector/power-cord.html
But if you are not that sure, i'll suggest you buying a whole new charger:
According to the specs of that computer, it is supposed to have a HDMI output. If for some odd reason you do not have one, you can get a VGA to HDMI adapter.
Copy n paste Ports: 4 x USB 2.0; FireWire; VGA out; S-video out; HDMI out
the simplest solution maybe just so simple... just a suggestion try unpluging the power connector to the motherboard then just press the power button to clear and shorted circuit and grounds then replug the motherboard power... if still no power try a new power supply.... better buy a new one than more parts will be damaged if you got a broken power supply.... how to check your power supply??? plug the power cord then use a hair pin to plug the red wire (wire in the middle) the just plug the other end to any black wire... if the fan of you power supply works your power supply still good to go... use some tester for the voltage values of wires...
