My grandmother has the perfect method for getting the old woodsmell out of her china cabinet. First, you crumple up newspaper and put it between the plates for 24 hours. Supposedly, newspaper sucks up scent. The next day, place a water bottle cap filledwith vinegar on each shelf. After 24hours, the bad wood smell should be gone. To get rid of the vinegar smell, place a water bottle cap filled withvanilla extract on each shelf. Leavethat in there for 2 to 3 days and you should have a beautifully smelling chinacabinet!
SOURCE: Can I buy a curio china cabinet that is made from glass rather than wood?
I've seen modern versions of the old style curio china cabinet that are made just from glass. Check out this link to the amazon site for an example http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Contemporary-Cabinet-Cappuccino-Bottom/dp/B000IN9BRC/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1344833064&sr=1-4&keywords=curio+china+cabinet
There are quite a few small differences between these two
special pieces of furniture. Here are a
few:
•
While both may feature glass doors, the doors on
a hutch are usually quite smaller.
•
China cabinets do not have detachable pieces,
whereas hutches typically consist of two separate pieces. The lower part of a hutch usually comes with
a set of drawers used for cutlery or other objects.
•
Hutches are much less formal than china
cabinets.
• China cabinets do not have serving areas.
