Cannot get top thread to catch and uplift bobbin thread, have changed bottom bobbin; think this may be shuttle problem. Need to get machine in to Polokwane in Limpopo Province to a repair center, cannot find a contact number of Elna there. Can you assist?

SOURCE: Elna Primula 410 Bobbin Winding Question

Wind the Bobbin
For the usual jobs, it is the best to use a medium sized thread.
2. Disengage the flywheel by unscrewing the coupling knob as far as it will go.

3. Place the bobbin on the bobbin winder, and push the bobbin winder to the right.

4. Pull out one of the spool pins and place the spool of thread on it.

5. Pass the thread through the bobbin winder tension discs, as indicated.

6. Wind the end of the thread around the bobbin by hand, in the direction indicated.

7. Wind the bobbin, at a medium speed by pressing lightly with a finger on the spool so as to stretch the thread better and thus fill the bobbin to a maximum. The full bobbin stops automatically.

8. Re-engage the flywheel by tightening the coupling knob.

9. Cut the thread and remove the bobbin from the bobbin winder by pushing the latter to the left.

SOURCE: how to thread bobbin on Elna SU

Please describe the type of bobbin you have. Is it held inside of a removable metal casing? Or is it a dropin type? Is the sewing machine what is known as a "freearm" which you can put a sleeve or trouserleg over or is it a flatbed type? When I know this I can help you further.(I used to sell sewing machines).

SOURCE: winding bobbin- elna

The bobbinwinder spindle is on the top of the machine on the right.

Try to turn the spindle with your fingers. If it is turning easily, good. If not, see below.

Push the spindle to the right and it should turn when the handwheel turns.

If the spindle does not turn properly, remove the two screws that hold the top cover on. DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREW THAT IS ON THE SMALL BLOCK NEXT TO THE BOBBINWINDER SPINDLE.

The top cover will not remove because of the handle. While lifting up the cover, peer under to make sure that there is a small rubber tire on the under side of the bobbinwinder spindle.

If the tire is there, place a small drop of oil on the spindle and turn it until it frees up. Try not to get oil on the tire, it will make it slip. Wipe it off if it gets oily.

Replace the top and retry.

My elna 2004 tread keeps on breaking, what can be the cause of it

Can be a variety of reasons. Firstly, is it a Quality thread? Cheap thread can be inconsistent in strength and also creates more 'dust'. Secondly, check the thread path for the top thread and also the bobbin thread. Reset tensions. Third, have you broken a needle lately - may have created a small burr on the bobbin / shuttle. Fourth, change the needle - is it the correct type and size for what you are sewing?
Hope that helps!
tip

Have you acquired an early Swiss Elna Sewing Machine??

There are still many of these Elna Supermatic sewing machines around and being used; they might not have all the electronic bells and whistles of a new model but they are a very well made solid metal case machine, parts can still be found and they will produce a good quality stitch and handle a wide range of fabric types.

Maintaining these early models means regular cleaning and oiling. Each time you get your Elna out to sew you need to remove the needle plate and open up the bobbin cover, take out the bobbin then using a little brush carefully remove all lint and fluff that you can see from the race, around the feed dogs and in the surrounding area. Your model may have marked red dots for oiling points, usually one in the middle of the bobbin holder, and often another red dot nearby in the race area. Plus a couple on the body area sometimes or top of the machine. Oil these marked points with a drop of good quality clear sewing machine oil when you get the machine out to sew, especially into the bobbin holder, then run the machine slowly without a bobbin or thread for a few seconds to spread the oil through the moving parts.

Use Swiss Elna metal bobbins only, they are very distinctive and only have holes on the top with a smooth underside and are slightly dished. Always wind the bobbin with holes on top and load it into bobbin holder same way; this way you always have the thread coming off the bobbin in the right direction.

It is important to always click the bobbin thread into the tension spring on the outside of the bobbin holder, there is usually an audible sound as you get it into tension. Just hold the thread tail with one hand and pull it around into the groove on the outside of the bobbin case, then put a finger onto the bobbin to hold it still, and push down on the thread tail with your index finger to push it down into the tension spring, you should hear it click in. Lift the thread tail vertically to check, the thread wont come out if its in fully.

Whenever you start a new seam ALWAYS hold the two threads at the back of the needle plate firmly as you start stitching until you've completed 4 or 5 stitches, to keep them clear of getting pulled back into the bobbin race. This saves those horrible jam ups happening when you start a seam.

Change your needle regularly to ensure it is sharp and use the right sized needle and type for the fabric you are sewing; these machines take the standard 130/7H needle system, and always install flat shank to the back of the needle bar.

Happy sewing on your vintage Elna.

Elna tavaro

Could be a host of things to trouble shoot,
Needle, is it sharp and right size for fabric type? Sharp for woven or ball point for knit
Is threading up correct, you don't say which model but this is link to threading a Star Series SU
http://youtu.be/xEn3dNeiTqs
Is bobbin wound nice and smoothly, also should be Elna 7hole bobbin which is slightly dished and holes one side. Always wind with holes on top and load same way, when you draw thread off bobbin will rotate anticlockwise. Also check bobbin thread has clicked into tension spring. You will hear it click in. If you lift upwards and thread comes free then try again, push down on thread with finger tip till it clicks into spring.
Is top tension dial clean between discs, always thread with presser foot raised so thread goes into tension fully. Is thread in take up lever, and through all thread guides?
Top tension dial on 5
That's my regular trouble shooting list, hope it helps or add more details

Thread from the bobbin is not getting looped

If the bobbin case rotates freely it is probable that the pinion gear is broken. Replace the gear, retime machine and voila it works again. Trouble is tough to find the gear anymore good luck it is a good machine and worth the effort

On my elna supermatic 722010 sewing machine, the thread makes the bobbin pop out and the thread get tangled underneath. I have had it fixed twice, which is expensive. Should I just get rid of it and buy...

not unless you can find another swiss elna, like star series su. check bobbin in right way, holes on top to wind and load. you havent bought anothet type bobbin??? go to www.arizonaexpressionz.com and download a manual for supermatic. then read bobbin winding and threading carefully and rewinf bobbin and thread up again. make sure thread goes into tension spring all the way. bobbin should turn anticlockwise when yoou pull thread. also please brush clean bobbin holder area and check for any threads caught there. now a drop of quality clear machine oil in middle hole and gently run for 30secs to work in. do this every time you get your machine out. there are several oiling points shown in manual. oil them. these machines are quality but yours may need love tlc from a elna tech especially if it has not been serviced in a while. but a well maintained elna will out stitch a new plastic machine any day in my humble opinion. if you want to join yahoo group elna heirlooms, experts who service their own and share photos info manuals and love these vintage classics.
