My bad didn't keep any paperwork assumed computer would recognize device once added to HP laptop
First, what kind of external device did you purchase? How does it attach to the HP laptop?
I assume you bought an external hard drive
(Terminology: Drives are for data storage, Memory is chips that go inside the machine)
So when you say download to laptop, what do you mean?
When you attach the drive to the laptop, probably by USB, the drive should show up under File Explorer: This PC as a letter. (E: or F: or something) If you click on that, it should show you the contents of the external drive. If the drive is not formatted, thenn Windows should give you a warning like "This device has to be initialized before it can be used"
If the drive is not functioning, that's another story.
Google for Using an External Drive with Windows.
Get documentation for the drive from the manufacturer's website.

This solution worked for me when I got the USB device not recognized message:

It can be quite frustrating. I've heard that older computers are more likely to have the USB device not recognized message.

Some of the externals have mapping issues in Windows. Although the TB shows in devices, you may need to remap it (right click on My Computer for mapping options) and in some cases, changing the drive letter will fix your problem. There's really no 1 definitive solution for these. If you're unable to fix the problem by remapping or changing the drive letter, you can partition the drive to recover your data. As far as the slow transfer rate goes, almost all externals are formatted in FAT. This has issues of its own with safely removing devices and slow transfer rates. I prefer to format my externals and flash drives in NTSF for more reliability. Best of luck.
SOURCE: computer does not recognize simpletech
I have a simpletech external drive that was working, but after i disconnect it unproperlly, i was getting the message <usb not recongnize>. I called simpletech, but customer service is ****, and anyway the drive inside is a hitahi, i have another simpletech and the drive inside is a western digital, whatever...
They told be to go to best buy to make a recover, so i called and they told me it s 250$, and if they cant do it, they will send it to a labotory witch cost 1700$, crazy ******* hein?
I red about getting drivers, putting the hdd in a fridge and much more stupid thing, BUT THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE, OPEN THE CASE, UNDER THE ALLUMINIUM STICKER THERE IS 2 SCREWS, REMOVE THEM, OPEN THE CASE, TAKE THE HDD INSIDE OUT AND REMOVE THE ADAPTER CONNECTED TO THE HDD(WHERE YOU CONNECT THE USB CABLE) CAUSE THIS IS THE PART CAUSING THE PROBLEM, THE HARD DRIVE IS OK AND YOU DIDN T LOOSE NOTHING. So now what you can do is just buy a new case for laptop hard drive (with a new usb adapter included), or buy another simpleshit hdd and switch the adapter part or just buy an adapter to make your hdd an usb hdd and Voila, and after that i suggest you buy yourself a better hdd than simpleShit and make a new backup.
