Probably time to replace the unit as the do wear out

See the instructions for that model. Sometimes you need to wait a minimum period of time between removal of the old battery and installation of the new one. Also make sure you are positioning the battery correctly; sometimes batteries can be put in backwards easily. It is also possible that the device is just bad and needs to be replaced.

Try another hard whack. If that does not undo the initial damage, nada will and you have a nice paper weight.

Detecotrs have a limited lifespan of 5-7 years. So sounds like you need new one (Its not worth to buy just a sensor). Take a look on amazon Amazon com smoke alarm detector (watch out on reviews). I hope this was helpful. cheers

The Kidde website does have a lot of manuals but you need the model number. Try going to this URL, then browse by subject. You'll probably find the answer there.

If this is a new site that has to be OK'd by the building inspector then he is a small minor deity and you must do everything you can to not tick him off or he'll run you thru the wringer, so put it where he says.
If it's a friend who is a building inspector then put 'em where you want them.
Mine are mounted on the ceiling.

Golding93, you could very well have elevated levels of CO in your home. You should leave your house immediately and call the fire department.
