Well, make sure the hose part is not clogged, this happened to my friends recently and their vacuum was smoking, if you're positive this isn't happening then it might be just the engine call the sellers, try to explain and see if they exchange for a new one or a refund.

SOURCE: Repair manual for Electrolux EPIC 6500 SR

I don't have a manual for these but the trickiest thing about these units is taking them apart. If you have an Aerus/Electrolux dealer near you, it's not a bad investment to have them install the motor for you. You would probably receive a warranty with the work, and the things a long time. Great return on investment. But if you are determined to do it yourself, open the front of the canister and remove the bag. As you are looking at the front of the unit, there are two vinyl coverd strips that run the length of the unit. Pull forward on these strips and then pull out so that the vinyl seperates from the plastic underneath. Now grab the plastic strip with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull towards the front of the canister. These can be tough if the machine has never been opened up before, but pull as hard as you need to, to slide the strip out. Once both strips are out, turn the machine over, pull out on the sides of the bottom of the unit, and lift up. The bottom should come of relatively easily, and eveything will be exposed. Good Luck!!

SOURCE: how do you replace switch on Epic 6500 vaccum

You may need a ROCKER device for the switch, however before you go there determine if you can hear an audible click when depressing the switch, or if the switch just springs up and down with no click.
A click means a rocker is needed. No click, just springing up and down with an occasional click means the spring attached to the underside of the switch button is fatigued, you need the button and switch mechanism, same location but above the rocker.
Also post the issue. If the lights are on and the vac won't start or stop, the switch is the problem area. If it starts and shuts off with the bag full light on it is more likely the control valve. If no lights come on your problem is in the cord or rewind and could be a failed rewind spool.
The best and genuine switch parts are best found only at an AERUS Elctrolux store
Look for my post from earlier today and you will have full instructions on opening and checking the control valve and the entire unit.
Post back with results

My electrolux Epic won't stay running but it runs when the hose is off.

Check for a clog in the hose or most likely the vacuum valve on top needs removed for cleaning or replacing. Hope that helps!

I have some sort of object in the hose of my Epic 6500. I have tried reversing the hose and blowing out the foreighn piece of debeis but this has not worked. Is there a way to remove the plastic...

By reversing it, I assume you plugged the hose into the exhaust blower on the top of the machine. If so, insert the other end into the intake and turn one the vacuum. This way the clog is also getting sucked at what should be the loose end.
If it's a sock or similar item, it will be more difficult. Yes, the handle can be removed, but can sometimes be a bit difficult to put back together for someone not real sure of what they're doing. I've seen several hoses ruined by having sharp or pointed objects inserted to clear a clog, cutting the hose and/or wiring, and ending up burning it up. I recommend taking it to a shop and letting a trained technician take care of it. An authorized Aerus Electrolux dealer would be best.

Electrolux Epic 6500 Vacuum - Suction stops when hose is attached

If the bag full light keeps coming on, you can first try adjusting the dial on top of the vacuum cleaner. If that does not work, then you need to change the control valve. This is an internal component of the canister and is directly below the dial.

You can ship the vacuum to http://evacuumstore.com/ and they can reapir it for you.

How to dismantle vacuum hose at the handle with the power switch on epic 6500

Good that you didn't just pry things open. If you look closely you will see several tiny plastic caps under which will be hidden screws. Remove the screws and gently separate the "handle cover" from the main handle, then slide the handle off the hose. Clean the internal handle contacts and the rings on the hose. Reassemble by installing handle onto hose fully to align contacts, then installing wiring cover portion onto the hand grip.
Any evidence of black pitting on the rings needs to be polished with fine sandpaper and the finger contacts adjusted for tension to eliminated further shorting. After cleaning, you can apply a very thin film of petroleum jelly to the contact rings for smoother rotation.
