Please remove the device from any power source, and then press and HOLD the power switch for 10-30 seconds - until the device either turns off or back on again. By the way, what this is doing is a "soft reset" of the device.

After that, turn the device OFF and back ON again - to TEST to make sure it powers up normally.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 205 keeps saying no maps available ???

This is easy. You have to run your software, select the maps tap and then transfer maps to the device. Chances are good you uploaded a 2009 map on top of the 2008 map. The updater doesn't delete maps.

Your unl file only has one key, you have two maps loaded. Simple go into the garmin directory and delete the map file and the mapsupp file. You can easily find them because they are greater than 500 mb.

Then run mapinstall (google for the file). This will install your most current map to the Nuvi. You are back in business.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 250W stuck on "Loading Maps..." screen

Try the reset, and if that fails, download the web updater from the garmin site and try that route.

Master reset will erase all way points or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
  5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes

SOURCE: my garmin nuvi 260 will not go past the loading maps screen

There is a corrupt or missing file associated with the mapping thats causing it to lock up. When that file is missing, your Nuvi never gets to the routine for communicating with your PC. That's why your PC can't detect it.

I've fixed this problem before. The unit must be placed in PRE-BOOT mode, forcing Windows to recognize it and then using a specific program, reflash the firmware to an older version that doesn't care that the file is missing. The unit will then boot properly and you'll regain detection to the unit in Windows. Then you can repair/replace the missing files and then reflash back to the latest firmware.

Yes, its a pain and not an easy process to the novice.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi will not load maps - why

Try the Hard Reset procedure outlined in this tip.

a1889e2.jpg

cf6e3a8.jpg

Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit. It's also one of the first things that Garmin will have you do when contact tech support regarding quirky unit behavior.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.

I hope that helps.

My garmin nuvi 255w keeps freezing up at loading maps screen...i have tried the hard reset but that doesn't work, when i push on the bottom right corner and start the gps, it doesn't even make it...

There is a hard reset button under the sticker at the bottom of the unit. It is located directly under the check mark on the sticker. Once you get it going fully charge the unit then go to the Garmin website and register and update your 255w. I will attach the link to the Garmin Site. Thanks for using FixYa

I have a garmin nuvi 265w and when i plug it itnton the cig cable in my taxi, it trys to load maps then goes off and on again. but keeps doing this without loading

You need to first check if the gps is charging, once you plug it in the cig cable, there ia a green light that shows it is charging, allow it to charge for some time before trying to use it. You need to take it out of the car first, then plug it into the main power socket to see if it will charge, if it does, then it means the charger and battery are working perfectly fine. Then you install it back in the car and try to turn it on, It should work now, but if it does not work, then you need to test the charging adapter and the battery separately on another garmin nuvi gps receiver. After testing you should be able to detect where the problem is from. Replace whichever is faulty and the gps should remain on and load maps. But if it does the same after checking, then it means all you have to do is to reset the gps.
Resetting the garmin nuvi gps receiver will do the job.
Hope this helped.

Garmin Nuvi 255w won't start up. tries loading maps and then goes in a continuous circle. acts if not charging. tried reseting and charging with wall charger and car charger

You should try to manually delete the maps (after a backup ) on the device , power cycle and retry sending the maps from MapSource or the Software CD from the manufacturer. The map is a single folder onto the device (eg. gmapsupp.img)

Garmin just shows its loading maps and then screen goes blank and it repeats this even when I hold down the button for 10 seconds to reboot Why is it not turning on?

A Garmin Nuvi 1300 freezes on 'loading maps,' or is acting erratically is symptomatic of having corrupt firmware.

To correct this, I recommend backing up your favorites, clearing all user data, and if it still is stuck, then updating your Nuvi firmware.

Follow these three steps to take to get your Garmin Nuvi 1300 running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Won't stay on

Have you installed anything lately? Do you have any sd card installed? Usually this is the cause for it to crash. There is a reset on the bottom of the nuvi, when it locks up blank, press the reset button and see what happens...

Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS, not working

Hello, Here was my problem. I was traveling at 60mph yesterday and my Nuvi 360 dislodged and fell down with a huge impact inside my car. I came home and tried to look for any damage. Unfortunately Nuvi had stopped to continue beyond loading maps screen. I tried rebooting , but the problem persisted. It would take me to reboot screen, but after screen calibration, when it came to loading map screen, again went blank. I tried this and just simple starting by pushing power button several times but to no avail. I called technical support, eho advised me to to just simply connect it to my labtop and leave it that way for 3 to4 hours. Bingo!, in the next 30 mins, I accidentally switched my laptop top off, but Nuvi had started to work all fine.
