Cub cadet ltx 1040 lawn mower, i engage left pedal and turn key on and it starts right up. no matter what gear i put it in,( reverse, neutral or forward), when i let up the pedal the engine dies.

Sounds like the seat safety switch is bad. test and replace

check the battery cables bypass them with your jumper cables the check the safety switches

On page 28 under "Fuse," it says that the 20-amp fuse "is located under the hood, mounted behind the top of the dash panel on the support bar."

Stalls when I push the pedal in reverse, going forward no issues

Hi Dan:
Some of these tractors have a safety interlock on the ignition/start switch that prevents you going in reverse when the mower is engaged.
Check the switch to see if there is a position one click to the left.
If there is, give it a try.
