I have a new Dynex 400 Watt ATX power supply. Yesterday,a piece of plastic popped out of the power supply and was hitting the fan. Please advise if power supply is safe to use. Thanks, Jim

About a month ago, I bought a brand new Dynex 400 watt ATX PC Power Supply. Yesterday, the power supply fan starting making noise. A piece of clear plastic was sticking out of the power supply and hitting the fan. I pulled the piece of clear plastic out of the power supply. Part of the clear plastic was black from being exposed to heat. After pulling the piece of plastic out of the power supply, I plugged the power supply back in, and watched it closely for 8 hours without any problems. Please advise me what the piece of clear plastic was doing inside the power supply, and whether the power supply can be safely used. Thanks, Jim West Email: [email protected]

Hi Jim,
Some psu manufactures put a plastic sleeve over high voltage components as a safety measure.
Is the piece you have flat or tubular?

SOURCE: I have a burned out Bestec ATX-250-12z power supply

yes it should do provided your current psu is not a small mATX one. ATX power supplies are pretty generic. Make sure you get one that has enough connectors to suit your system, having said that, Considering it's an off the shelf PC I would guess most PSU's would have the right number and type of connections.

I recently purchased a Dynex 400 watt atx power supply for my Dell optiplex gx280 (slim form). The reason I did this is I have a new PNY geforce 8400 GPU and my old power supply is only 160 watts (1/2 the...

Sounds like the power supply is not compatible with the motherboard. If the motherboard can't support a 400 watt powers supply you will either get a blinking light or nothing at all. Those optiplex's use a proprietory power supply because of the pin connectors and how a power supply is supposed to fit in there. If you can't find a 400 watt power supply that fits then get a hold of Dell and see if they sell one for that computer.

Smells like hot electrical from the power supply. which way should the round fan face in the case? Towards the motherboard or out the top. Ran system check, it is not hot. I thought it might be new and...

Is this a new ATX switch mode power supply?
If the ATX power supply is old then the capacitors may leak and overheat to give a burn't smell. I would not advise you to try and repair these power supplies, they operate with dangerous mains voltages inside the case.
The ATX power supply has standard mountings holes that line up with the desktop case and can only be fixed to the case in one position.
If you have overheating problems you can add addition 12volt fan inside case, The fan should be positioned to draw air into the case.
