I've got a Maxtor 300 GB shared storage device. My computer would not recognize the drive, so I figured I'd reinstall the software. Pressed the msssort icon rather than the install icon and now it won't let me install the software and install icon is gone. All I see is the msssort icon and it gives me an error code0x80040707. Anyone know what to do for something like this?

Hi gogoc_da_man,

Take the CD out of the drive, and then reboot your system, then insert the CD again, and you'll get the install icon back.

Good Luck

Mark

Maxtor 200 gb external will not show up in my computer after numerous installs

For Vista you don't need any driver for this, it should recognize and install automatically.
Did you check the device manager to see if the disk is recognized in the device list?

Next step is to check the Disk Manager (right-click My Computer, select Manage and then select disk management), and see if the disk already has a partition and has been formatted. If not, then it will not show up in "My Computer" with a drive letter yet.

Some details on external hard disk troubleshooting might also help.

Did a system recovery on pc now can't find my harddrive

Hi Shannon,
yes, you could - and should - connect the external harddrive directly to your pc in case it throws errors. You will need to do this in any case to figure out, what is wrong with the drive.

Connect the USB cable to your PC and check whether the drive is recognized by your Operating System. If it fails to be detected get back to us and we will try to help you.

Maxtor and vista

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.

Check the manufacturers website, as all drives no matter what should come with drivers of some sort. this is the most likely cause for what is wrong.

HDD not recognized in XP Installation

if you are using it as a slave hard drive, you should be able to right click my computer, manage, then in next window double click storage, then disk management, then look for your drive, you can then look to see if its recognised, if not it will tell you that its not configured, and you should be able to right click on it and format it.
