Question about HP Pavilion dv9000z Notebook
6 mo. old, ran ok sure, then left room doing some downloads (data) and. Screen black. Will not power up. black screened... Blue light around inserted AC is on. Tried removing battery and AC.
I had the exact same problem so I called HP support.The instructions were- remove power cord from lap top if power cord is connected, then remove battery, connect power cord to lap top then turn on lap top by holding power button down for 30 seconds. It booted up, no problem. The proceedure is to remove static electricity.

Same experience, DV9060. Called HP, they tried having me do the reset by unplugging and removing battery then holding power button for 45 seconds to release static charge. Hitting power again showed same result. Holding F10 at startup did not bring up the BIOS screen so I was told it would require a motherboard replacement.
Waiting now for call about warranty approval, then for them to send me a package to mail it for service.

Had the same thing happen to me. I just got off the phone with HP after $50 the problem was solved and simple. Take out the battery, unplug the computer, I know, you've all done this, but do it again. Then push the start button for 40 seconds, then plug in, do not put the battery back in yet. Start it up and voila! You will have power! No more expensive paperweight! I told you it was simple :^) I'm so happy this worked, of course the laptop was 10 days past it's warrantee, so I figured it was going to be expensive or require a new laptop, I'm just glad it was simple and relatively cheep to fix. Now I know what to do if it happens again.

I have two notebooks to send in. The reason specified on their service ticket reads: "Failure : APOLLO AND ATLANTIS MOTHERBOARD ISSUE"
The free replacement extends 24 months AFTER your original warranty.
My notebook wouldnt start, then I got it to start, then the wireless was missing, then it wouldn't start again.

My DV9000 worked well till a couple of weeks ago, It had some issue with the battery not charging for two months or more but it worked well - no crashes - nothing it worked well, then a couple of weeks ago it stopped booting up. Followed rai55's instructions, took out the battery connected it to the socket and it booted up. Now from a cold start it only boots up this way. It will come up after hibernating /sleeping even if the battery is in, but if I shut it down, I have to take the battery out and boot it.
Applied the bios patch that HP put out.. battery charging still an issue and it still does not power up with the battery installed. The battery charging status is more descriptive and after the bios flash, it shows that it is not charging.
After a bit of digging around on google I realized that this was a wide spread problem and HP extended the warranty etc etc. I called and was told that there is a mother board problem and I was sent a box to send the dv9000 in for repair. I backed up all my data (the DVD drive works like a charm) and sent it in.
What followed is an absolute nightmare. I'm still trying to get it resolved with a case manager, but after this I don't want to buy anything HP.
Two very very rude support people claimed that there was liquid spill.. first that the screen was cracked and liquid from inside the LCD screen split. Then that I'd split some liquid on my notebook. Then that the mother board "melted" and nothing in my notebook was working:

My notebook was working perfectly well, I had no crashes, no blue screens. The only problem was with the battery charging and bootup with the battery.

What HP's support service is doing is just horrible. I'm at my wits end. HP wants me to pay more for their shitty product and the rude support guy wanted me to buy another notebook, because this one was toast.
Any suggestions on dealing with them. I've asked for pictures for the liquid damage.
Needless to say this is my last HP product. I don't like being jerked around.

Stannis was completely right about this issue and there being an extended warranty on the dv 9000, there are multiple other machines that are also affected by this, so if you are having these kind of issues, bring up his link and call hp, I expected to get the run around, but the HP support was quick to help me once I brought up the extended warranty from thier website. The first tech I talked to the other day said that I would have to pay about 500 for the repair and new motherboard, but the guy I spoke with today said they will just put in a new motherboard and send it back free of charge...including shipping both ways...Awesome link Stannis! Saved me some cash...just wish I would have found it before I bought a new laptop! No biggy kids can use it I guess...

Called HP - usual no help just offer to ship away and pay $300 plus to get repaired. NOTE: The dv9000's have defective motherboards. I ordered mine in December of 2006 online. AMD dual-core, 2G RAM, twin 120G hard drives ect..my machine would have problems with WIFI (not working) unit got very hot upon running for an hour or two, I fixed the problem one or twice by reseating the RAM chips. What is happening with these big 17inch machines is that the fan design is faulty causing motherboards to overheat, and the monitor hinges on the left side (fan side) will crack from overheating.
To resolve; I did the following;
Pressing pwr button/30 sec and power cycle with ac and
batt aswell, I blew hot air from "Blow dryer" - in about the cooling fan and processor fpr 2-3 minutes. I then started pressing power button, several times - it started to last longer on starts - then shut down - continued with dryer and pwr button and the darn thing
started up and booted back to os. WOW! I know it's not fixed but
for now I have a working pc to back up data and allow time to
(evacuate) whats on it before the next time it dies.

This is known fault with Hp Dv9000 series with Nvidia chip set irrespective of version are covered under " HP Limited Warranty Enhancement "

Rai55 thanks...your solution worked...laptop turned on but screen did not light up was black...led lights power on...and kept turning on andm off again...did RAI55 suggestion and BRAVO...it worked...woah didn't wanna send it to HP and take weekes to get back...now on to backing up my data...

Call HP. The dv9000's have defective motherboards. I ordered mine in December of 2006 online. AMD dual-core, 2G RAM, twin 120G hard drives ect..my machine would have problems powering up sometimes, I fixed the problem one or twice by reseating the RAM chips. When I called HP, I gave them all my laptop info like the model number, and serial number. Explained all the problems with not being able to power up the machine, cracked hinge ect.. they mailed me a box postage paid, I mailed it in and it came back totally fixed. They even replace my power cord which my Jack Russell chewed on a bit. Great customer service. Call HP, if you get someone that doesn't want to help, call back and talk to another customer service rep. I'm extremely happy.

My HPdv8000 would not boot. The power/LED lights turn on, but no windows. No option for BIOS either. Sometimes I would get a triple beep. First I removed the battery and held down the power button to drain remaining juice(some models have a reser button on the bottom of the laptop). This did not work. My second remedy was to remove the RTC battery. Instructions can be found here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00554540.pdf

OMG! I had already resolved myself that tomorrow I would be going out to purchase a new laptop. Like several here, my computer would power up, cycling the blue lights but no display activity. Removing the battery, plugging in the A/C adapter, and holding the power button down for 30 seconds worked. Like another poster here, while holding the power button down, the power cycled off again, but I continued to hold down the power button for the 30 second count. Hit the power again and it booted up. And this, after an hour in chat with an HP tech rep, who offered no assistance whatsoever.

Use Rai55's solution, it's solution number 11, and it is the best way to relieve static electricity that has accumulated in the computers guts. (take the battery out, plug in AC plug and hold power down for 30 second's, then turn on the computer like you normally would)

I am having a very similar problem. My computer turns on the HP Invent
screen shows up and the Phoenix Bios Logo in the bottom right corner
and the esc and F10 in the left corner. The computer hums for a few
seconds and then shuts off and then turns on back to the same initial
screen over and over.
I went to the HP website and it was suggested that I open the cover where the RAM is located. Open it up and remove the RAM and then put it back in. It worked.

There is a recall on the HP Pavillions and HP will fix the problem for free just call them let them no the problem and they will send u a box to send it off in and it doesnt matter if you have a warranty

I hope I have reached you with this info before you gave up. I have the HP Pavililion 17" dv9000 running win 7. the graphics card driver keeps shutting down, but it come back up quickly. Last week I was using Office & running a video as well and i felt it getting hot in my lap. All of a sudden the screen made a popping sound and the computer crashed. IT WOULD NOT POWER UP AT ALL!! but the blue light where the power connector entered the laptop was lit blue. We took out the video card & re-insulated it with a penny. etc.... put it all back together and i could have died when it wouldn't do anything at all still. We tried everything. Finally a friend called and said that i needed to reset the static charge in the computer. He held down the power button for a long time and my laptop powered up like nothing had happened at all. I hope this helps you.

A neighbor gave me a dv9000 (9308nr) It would flash its blue lights for a second then die. I did the battery hold-start button down. Pull the mems out swicthed em' around Tried it all again. Didn't work. But I discovered one mem stick is bad. Then I moved the hdd to the other drive bay. And zam! got a bios screen!! Hahahahaha..Moved the drive back to its proper port and I got booting up.

Same problem and the only solution i see is to raise our voice loud enough so HP can extend the warranty for those models like they did for the AMD models

I want to add my 2 bytes to this thread as I have a dv9205us #RP115ua. I called HP last week and explained the situation to a CS and the agent was short with me and a bit rude. He claimed that the extended warranty time expired in February and I was out of luck. I called again last night really in hope that I could at least get a discount on a replacement mainboard as the new one costs around $350. This time the CS agent walked me through the standard tips: remove power and hold power button down, tap the F10 key. After nothing worked I was kindly told that HP will repair the unit and they are sending me a shipping box. I am told that the turnaround time is 4-5 days.
HP may have a change of heart.
If you have called HP and was told no, try again with another agent. HP knows that they are responsible for this and I am sure that they will rectify the problem before the expected litigation (RE:class action lawsuit).

I recently ran into this problem on an ibook. Did some searching to find out the solder joints on the video chip had come loose. They use solder balls to fasten this stuff and they crack from the flexing.
Get yourself a pentip torch and heat the video chip (Right beside processor) hot enough to melt the solder, but don't send the other curcuits across the board in doing so.It sounds outragous but it works!!!
I did to my dv9000 and it works perfect. Go to youtube.com and type in ibook repair and see some other ways to do this. Remember the video chip beside the CPU on the same side of the sys board is th one you need to heat.

Try to short the eprom near the battery bios pin 4 with 8 only for a second when you switch on the notebook.These will send the bios to default reset and clear all the errors.Succesfully done it today with DV9000.

Killed by Overheating
Once the GPU overheats it will have to be 'reset' essentially by reflowing the processor. Complete disassembly and make sure the solder connections are intact. Videos are available for this task taking you step by step. I do not post them on YouTube because they would also be mixed with those that don't know, causing this information to be worthless.
The DV9000 Series is one of the last dogs of HP. So I created a blog related to all the problems, with solutions. What Kills DV Series Laptops Getting In Too Deep What Kills HP DV series laptops has been active over 6 years and 1/2 million hits. Use Google to refine the search of the blog.
Overall the problem consists of RoHS solder being used. The shrinkage factor is greater than Pb/Sn solder, so this was not considered in the engineering specs.
When the solder balls cools they contract. Ever so slightly, but enough to lose contact with solder pads if there was an insufficient weld during the Infra-red/hot air solder process. Combine that with transport times, nitrogen casing leaking when GPU shipped from manufacturer (on both motherboard and GPU) there is the likelihood of oxidation.
The site covers issues with DV6000, DV9000, and Compaq F700 series. Which are virtually identical. Major differences are
HP DV6000 - some with onboard video ram/or shared ram
HP DV9000 - has 2 SATA connectors
CPQ F700 - does not have PC Card slot, or IR remote
Comes in both processor types AMD & Intel with the AMD being the most prone to failure.
Take the time to read as much as you can. This was the only way I could share over 30+ years of Digital Electronics Experience. From Shuttles, Missiles, Hybrid IC, to MicroElectronics.
Relating to Static Electricity
There is no static electricity in modern laptops this is an old Urban Myth carried over from the earlier days. A broad metalic backplane & metallic surfaces disperses any static electricity. When someone tells you that, they don't know what the problem is (Even HP Techs).
Holding the power button 15 sec clears the BIOS information stored and it is reloaded from CMOS.

Your logic board is defective. There are two ways to fix it. You can reflow the logic board (repairs the solder connections) or replace the logic board. You can do it yourself or have a third party laptop repair service do it for you. You can try to replace the part yourself, it is available on any auction website. There is a Laptop repair guide that teaches you how to install the part yourself. Google how to reflow a motherboard and you will find ways to re-heat the board, chances of success of DIY reflow are around 50%.

DV9000 would not boot; removed battery as others suggested; held the power button for 40 seconds; voila! It booted immediately! My problem is the unit says the primary HDD is the secondary ... only one SATA HD installed. Now that's a poser. HP quit responding.

This may work for you, I had the same problems which recurs. I have found if you keep your finger on the F1 key when you turn it on, after a few seconds an annoying beeping alarm will sound but let go of the F1 key and the computer boots up normally. I don't know why but it worked on my dv9000

Attention: This problem is caused by the overheating of the graphic card chipset and consequently the melting of BSA solder, which is lead free.
The blowing of hot air through fans worked for most people because the solder comes back again to position. But, the problem will happen again soon when the vga chipset overheats.
So, the definite solution is to change the solder by one that contains lead by qualified personal and maybe, change the chipset also if any damage has been done to it.

Ok not sure if this will work for everybody but i kept hittin the f10 button bios set up came up i went to the boot options then go to boot order and drop floopy drive and put ur cd boot drive 1st so it boots from ur cd drive hit save n exit n bang im back up. hope i help somebody cause i was here searching for help erlyer

Something i am still missing by problems with laptops BY THE WORD (STATIC ELECTRICITY) but this answer is not an little important thing, only if static electricity is in the question but some people do not realize that a laptop is in much circumstances working like a vaccuum, and the most important thing is a laptop is a note book for traveling to use it everywhere, and it goes with you from room to room and also in sometimes nice new wallpapered rooms, beware that in the most rooms where people have working old wallpaper chipped or having wallpaper paste toucheth insite the house the methyl cellulose floats everywhere insite electronic devices in priority modem devices and flatscreens can shure make a lot of unusual problems led that will burning that not can be burning but do it by creep strains also in devices that are realy not happy with static electricity, I have gained the experience to anyone with a newly wallpapered room which had stopped the cable modem from the phone and computer. the only way i remove methyl cellulose on the best way is with pressure air or with a canister lighter gas (outdoor) and a pliers in order to operate the gasnipple because of the strong degreasing action beware of parts that have lubricate like potentiometers or drives and fans. do not spray on things where are mechanic turning driving parts. but methyl cellulose (wallpaper paste) is one of the most underrated substance that can interfere so easy electronics in some cases it will be a problem that when something become repaired the cause can repeating the complaint if the electronic boards are not protected for this kind of dust that is hard to see inside , cleaning before every repair is very important. avoid repetition

My HP Pavillion DV6700 booted to a black screen (no power at display, led lights all on, none blinking) tonight after doing a windows update last night. It wasn't even getting to the BIOS test.
I took out the battery, held the power button down 40 seconds, plugged the computer back in (without battery) and then turned it on. BOOT UP!

I had the same problem with my HP... I tried the whole "Release Static Charge"... yeah it did nothing. I also tried pressing the F1 button while starting it up and that actually worked. Thank you!

Same issue, there is no lastable work around besides replacing the MOBO. Call HP and tell them that there is an extended warranty for this problem (at first they said I was out of warranty, but by mentioning my extended warranty they instantly let up.) I'd suggest brining you comp to a computer place if you want to keep the info on your hadr drive, but most likely they will just replace the MOBO so a reformat won't be necessary (from what i've researched so far on the web, also the service rep said this when i asked him.)
